In London, Wien, Paris und München bildeten sich Zentren,…in denen Künstler aller Bereiche die Grundlagen fanden, um ihre Vorstellungen zu realisieren. Gedankliche Vorbereitung war die Suche nach einer geistigen Neuorientierung, ein Aufstand gegen den erstarrten Historizismus, gegen ein sattes Bürgertum, das sich eine fade und abgestandene Kunst anfertigen ließ. Unterschiedlich war der Nährboden in den einzelnen Städten: während sich in Wien ein Kreis ernster Künstler fand, waren es in München die Schwabinger, die den ? wesentlich lockereren ?Ton angaben. Paris stand ganz im Banne der Bohemien, mit einem deutlichen Hang zur halbseidenen Welt des Tingeltangel und in England schließlich mündete die strenge Art des Walter Crane in die erotische Kunst Beardsleys. Für viele Künstler war der Jugendstil nur Durchgangsstadium, eine Zeit, in der sie die neuen Strömungen aufnahmen, um dann ihre eigentliche Entwicklung in andere Richtungen zu nehmen. Auch die Abneigung gegen den Jugendstil formierte sich bald und es tummelten sich im modischen Bereich der neuen Art auch Scharlatane, die reiche Angriffsflächen für Kritik boten. Das etablierte Bürgertum hatte ohnehin eine Abneigung, irgendwelche Reformbestrebungen zu unterstützen, und in dem Augenblick, wo Sektierertum oder oberflächliche Nachahmung die Oberhand gewannen, wurde das ursprünglich echte Anliegen des Jugendstils zum Gespött der Menschen. gepflegtes Exemplar, nur kleine Lesespuren * Verlag: Ramerding : Berghaus-Verlag||Bayreuth : Gondrom in Komm.
