Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. Hardcover. Red cloth over boards with elaborate gilt stamping to front cover and spine; blind stamping to rear. Title page dated 1855. No copyright page. 272 pages. In fair condition. Cloth at head and foot of spine and corners is frayed. Small split beginning at head of spine along hinge. Covers have some light soiling, though I have to admit the beautiful stamping is distracting from those imperfections. Front and rear gutters are beginning to crack through, so binding feels fragile. Gilt page edges. Beautifully realistic illustrations throughout. A fair reading copy.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. This book is housed in its own custom-made, slightly marked, box. There is some edge wear to the boards of the book, particularly in the corners and on the top and bottom edges of the spine, where the cloth is torn and fraying. Despite this, the boards are exceedingly beautiful. Intricately pressed and with charming gold gilt to the front and spine. Internally, the end pages are slightly yellowed, but this does not extend into the body of the book. There are no markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are pristine, crisp and complete. Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hard cover, 8vo, in marbled paper-covered boards, red calf label gilt to spine with title, all edges marbled. 308pp. Printed London, Davison, Simmons and Co., Whitefriars. A total of seventeen tissue-guarded full page illustrations from engravings are included in this annual literary anthology: a title page with neoclassical wreath after Henri Corbould, frontispiece illustration ,"The Adieu" opposite second illustrated title page picturing medallion of British King William IV. (Letterpress title page follows). **CONDITION: Very Good generally, but "a tad musty." Hinges and joint in order. Spine moderately darkened with a small handwritten label in old ink near foot, possibly from a personal library, as there are also ghosts of an inch wide printed label to both ffep. and table of contents page. Pages are bright, plates crisp. MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY (1797-1851) has four attributed contributions to this literary annual. These include the first appearance of two short stories "by the Author of Frankenstein." (Lyles) Additionally, two sets of "stanzas" are anonymous but attributed to her by scholars (Sunstein , Bennet). The poems begin "To love in solitude and mystery." (p. 28) and "I must forget thy dark eyes' love-frought gaze." (p. 52). In Shelley's first short story, "The Brother and Sister. An Italian Story," (p. 105) a Sienese family of note comes under acute financial pressure from political rivals, leading to the banishment of a young man. His younger sister is left behind, made ward of the usurpers but events conspire to bring the two rival houses back into alignment in this romantic tale. Birmingham, England Artist ELIZA SHARPE (1796-1874) contributes the painting after which the title character "Flora" is seen in the woods with her maid contemplating her escape. Eliza Sharpe, the second of four artistic daughters of an engraver, William Sharpe, and his wife, worked a lengthy career in London as a portraitist and miniaturist, and was secty. of The "Old" Water-Colour Society after 1829. Her elder sister Louisa (1798-1843) also contributed to these pages. (DNB) The second Mary Shelley story, "The Invisible Girl" is a truly gothic tale with a ghostly element. A fishing boat flounders off the Welsh coast, but is guided to safety by a mysterious light coming from a seemingly abandoned stone tower. Ghosts of the past play a role in this gripping tale. Other notable artistic contributions were by J.M.W. Turner, who's view of "Erhenbreitstein" is shown. REF: W. Lyles Mary Shelley, An Annotated Bibliography,(1975) "The Brother and Sister" and "The Invisible Girl (D1l and D1m). Sunstein and Bennet in "Newly Uncovered Letters and Poems by M.W. Shelley, in the Keats-Shelley Journal 46 (1997). Scarce. (AMJ). Eliza Sharpe, Louisa Sharpe, J.M.W. Turner, Henri Corbould; C. Stanfield et al (illustrator). Book.…

Add to basketThree pages, 12mo, bifolium, good condition, in her sprawling hand, 1/4in. strip of glue from previous laying down on blank page 4. "My dear Sir | Pray do not think me forgetful towards you in not answering your note received many days ago, but I am so occupied and fatigued with writing that I have not a [moment?] to myself, and after all I fear it will be impossible for me to fulfill [sic] my engagement with [publisher] Mr Bentley - | Excuse the brevity of this, I thank you for the [?], and I expect your book is universally read and as universally praised - | Always sincerely yours | M. Blessington. | Not a drawing has Mr Heath sent -". A slip of paper has been attached to page [3] giving the details about the correspondent F. Mansel Reynolds (address etc). Note [Background from 'The Victorian Web']; "These appeared from time to time between July 1832 and December 1833. In the meantime, she asked Bulwer's advice on writing novels. He was now a successful author and took her proposal to Bentley, who was to publish his next three books. Bentley offered Lady Blessington four hundred pounds for the copyright of her first book, a generous offer; in response, she produced six hundred pages in four weeks, of the total nine hundred and eight pages of The Repealers, published in three volumes in June 1833. This work contained thinly veiled references to her enemies in Ireland, but also directly complimented L.E.L.'s Romance and Reality. The success of her Conversations with Lord Byron and her novel obtained an offer for her to edit Heath's Book of Beauty, the first volume of which Landon had produced. For Heath, the snob appeal of a Countess was more attractive than that of a mere poetess, however famous. She prepared her first issue during the summer of 1833 and it was published in November, to enable it to be shipped to America, India and the Colonies, but dated 1834. Contributors to this issue were her dear friends Walter Savage Landor and Bulwer, as well as Henry Bulwer and John Galt, and seven contributions from her own pen. Heath raised Lady Blessington's salary when the Book of Beauty beat Landon's popular Drawing Room Scrapbook by two thousand copies, a sore fact for Landon.".…
