Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. It is signed and inscribed to Pat and Kermit Adler. The inscription reads: 'To Pat and Kermit, who would know-- Isabel Glass'. Kermit Adler illustrated several books. He spent many years working as the art director and illustrator in Lord & Taylor's advertising department before becoming a co-creative director there, a position he shared with his wife, Pat. He left Lord & Taylor's for a short time to become the art director at Saks Fifth Avenue, before returning to Lord & Taylor as the art director and creative director. He was also a watercolorist, exhibiting in one-man and group shows. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. There is some color loss or fading on the front. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There is one tiny crease just below the spine's top edge. The cover edges are in good shape, no rubbing. There is some of the same color fading on the front bottom edge. The page edges look very good. The book is solidly bound. The covers are nicely tight. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I didn't find any instances of soiling. I didn't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. The dust jacket is in pretty good shape. I have it in a fitted protective cover. There is a light bit of wear at both spine ends. There is a little color fading on parts of the spine. The flaps are in good condition. There is a tan bit of toning just off the rear flap's top edge. There is a clip at the front flap's top corner removing the price. There are no other clips. From the dust jacket: 'Isabel Glass takes the reader into the world of power -- those who seek it, those who have it and those who are afraid of losing it. Here are the machinations that go on behind the chic façade of a New York department store, and here, too, are the games women must play if they want to be neither losers nor weepers. With Fifth Avenue Store Only, Ms. Glass has written a novel that marks the debut of an author who will keep her readers turning the pages for more.'. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 24 cm. [10], 581, [1] pages. Frontis Illustration. Illustrations. Bibliography. Notes. Index. DJ somewhat worn and soiled. INSCRIBED ON FEP BY SELWA ROOSEVELT, widow of Archie Roosevelt! Sylvia Jukes Morris is a British-born biographer. She is married to writer Edmund Morris. Morris's articles and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Travel & Leisure, and The Washington Post. She has served as a judge for the National Book Awards and lectured at the Library of Congress, the National Portrait Gallery and the Newseum of Washington, D.C., as well as the New York Society Library, the Chicago Humanities Festival, the Miami Book Fair, and the University of Delaware. Her television credits include appearances on The American Experience, C-SPAN, the History Channel and a transatlantic literary symposium presented by the Paris Review and the English-Speaking Union. Derived from a Kirkus review: FDR saluted her for cleverly managing his Uncle Ted. Intellectual, fervent, intimidating, serene, Edith Kermit Roosevelt is very much worth reading about. The complex character of Edith Roosevelt remains an enigma. She and TR were the closest and fondest of childhood chums. They met by momentous accident; and within weeks they were engaged--launching what must stand as one of the most ardent, closely attuned matches in White House history. Shortly after moving into the White House, she proceeded to do over the White House; to assemble the known sets of presidential china, engage the first Social Secretary, entertain with unprecedented elan (Henry Adams, John La Farge, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and Henry James were guests at one memorable lunch). . . all the while savoring the escapades of son Kermit's madcap "White House Gang" and remaining, to the last, TR's "Darling Edie." Details galore.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. Autograph; 282 pages; Inscribed on ffep from the author to Kermit Roosevelt -- For Kermit Roosevelt / from / Arthur Stratton / with a good deal / of pleasure in / the gift. / 1956" (from one spy to another spy). Clean and tight in original binding in dustjacket with tears and chipping (now in mylar cover). The author and the recipient were both key intelligence officers in the Office of Strategic Services (precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency). Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt, Jr. (1916 - 2000) was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and was the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax, which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration, and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. In addition to being an interesting travel writer and novelist, Arthur Stratton was also an intelligence agent with the OSS. In 1942, while serving as an ambulance driver with the Free French Forces in the Eighth Army commanded by Montgomery, he was very severely wounded, more than ten times, while evacuating wounded soldiers at Bir Hakeim in the Libyan Desert. After recovering from these wounds, he was recruited by the OSS and relocated to Turkey, where he taught English in Istanbul. He later worked for the CIA for ten years, often returning to Turkey (where he likely encountered Ambassador George McGhee who played a role with Roosevelt in the coup against Mossadegh). This book was his first major publishing success. ; Signed by Author.

Condition: Good. Presumed single original copy. Format is approximately 7.25 inches by 10.5 inches. Stationery has Eleven Broadway New York printed at the top. Roosevelt, Kermit is noted in pencil at the top right corner. Ink correction in the first paragraph. Minor soiling notes. Soiling and perhaps some adhesive on the verso. In this letter Kermit Roosevelt addresses having contracted for a series for The Sportsman, willingness to consider writing 'something additional', and discussed Mr. Danielson's comments "on the polo situation" which Roosevelt generally agreed with, but had some reservations about the criticisms of 'our men's sportmanship in actual play." Roosevelt commented that he was departing for India on the night of November 9th. Kermit Roosevelt MC (October 10, 1889 - June 4, 1943) was an American businessman, soldier, explorer, and writer. A son of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, Kermit graduated from Harvard College, served in both World Wars (with both the British and US Armies), and explored two continents with his father. He died while serving in the US Army in Alaska during World War II. After WWI, Roosevelt went into business; he founded the Roosevelt Steamship Company and the United States Lines. In 1928-1929, Kermit Roosevelt and his brother Ted were members of the Kelley-Roosevelts Asiatic Expedition. The Roosevelt brothers told the story of their part in the expedition in their book Trailing the Giant Panda. Richard Ely Danielson (1885-1957) was editor of the Boston Independent from 1924 to 1928, editor of The Sportsman from 1927 to 1937, and then president of the Atlantic Monthly Company and associate editor of The Atlantic Monthly. The Sportsman (January 1, 1927 to December 31, 1937) ran for 132 issues. The Sportsman was the first "coffee-table" sports magazine published in America. In the spirit of Vanity Fair and Country Life, which it resembled, the magazine focused on particular interests of the upper class, in this case, amateur sports: fishing, hunting (with emphasis on fox and duck), golf, tennis, yachting and motorboating, the turf, car racing, swimming, even chess and bridge. Prominent contributors included writers Ross Santee, Julian Hawthorne, and amateur champions from most of the sports the magazine covered. Guy Arnoux drew most of the covers in the twenties; a variety of artists contributed covers in the thirties. Contributors of interior art included Gluyas Williams, DT Carlisle, Frank Benson, W. Heath Robinson, Rea Irvin, and E.H. Suydam. The Sportsman persevered through the Depression, but finally succumbed to the economic malaise in 1937. Single sheet, typed on one side. Signed.

Add to basketFirst edition, number 4 of 100 copies only, signed by Belle Roosevelt on the prologue as issued, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper "for Anna with dear love Belle April 25th 1956". The book, privately printed for Belle Roosevelt (cousin by marriage of Franklin Roosevelt), is her account of an anecdote recounted to her by FDR shortly before his death. He had told Clementine Churchill he was appalled by the way the English cooked Brussels sprouts, over-boiling them then serving them in tepid water. After a heated discussion, Roosevelt promised to visit England with sprout recipes from across the United States. Roosevelt died a month later. Belle arranged this printing of the anecdote, which is appended with various American recipes for sprouts, and sent a specially-bound copy to Clementine. It is a tempting possibility the recipient was FDR's daughter Anna. Octavo. Original blue quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, marbled sides. Housed in original marbled slipcase. Spine lightly sunned, slipcase slightly rubbed: a near-fine copy.
