Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. Luca, Ghérasim. Lausanne, Editions Meyer, 1961. L'Extrême-occidentale. Sept rituels (translated as The Far West. Seven Rituals) was published in 1961 and features seven signed original etchings by some of the most renowned figures in the Surrealist and modernist art movements: Jean Arp, Victor Brauner, Max Ernst, Jacques Herold, Wifredo Lam, Matta and Dorothea Tanning. This edition is loose in original wrappers and linen case with gilt-stamped title on the spine. N. 97 of 125, of which this is one of only 80 numbered copies on Vélin d'Arches, signed by Luca in justification page. This particular collection represents a symbolic exploration of myth, ritual, and the far reaches of human experience both geographical and psychological. The title, L'Extrême-occidentale, alludes to the Western world (in the sense of "the far west"), suggesting themes of exploration, discovery, and perhaps the mysticism of indigenous cultures or the exotic, which was a common theme in Surrealist works. The subtitle Sept rituels (Seven Rituals) speaks to the ancient, yet timeless, acts that humans engage in to connect with something larger than themselves whether it be spirituality, nature, or the unconscious. Rituals have also long been a theme in Surrealism, representing a bridge between conscious reality and unconscious desires, fears, or dreams. Each artist brings their unique perspective to this theme, addressing not only the external cultural rituals but also the inner, personal "rituals" that are part of human psychology and existence. - Very good copy. (35,4 × 27,2 cm). Signed by Author(s).

Wraps; 4to; unpaginated (approx. pp. 100), text, plus a full-color reproduction of "Zambezia-Zambezia," and 18 works reproduced in b/w on glossy stock. Inscribed by Lam "Para mi amigo Enrico Donati, con un buen recuerdo del cubano, Wilfredo 1950." Wrappers detached. Contents are near fine. Enrico Donati (1909-2008) was an Italian-born American painter and sculptor, known for his works in Surrealism, Constructivism, and Abstract Expressionism. He attended the New School for Social Research, and in 1942 had his first one-man show at the New School's gallery. His work impressed the art historian Lionello Venturi, who brought him into a circle of prominent European artists, many of them Surrealists, who had gathered in New York at the outset of the war Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Yves Tanguy, Arshile Gorky, Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Fernand Léger and the American sculptor Alexander Calder. Mr. Donati's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, as well as the Museum of Fine Art in Houston and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
