Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First printing of the author's second book, fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket. The jacket has a touch of soiling on the spine, and small area along the top edge of the jacket that looks like it had an old style protector because there is a very faint line running just below the top edge across the entire jacket, including the flaps. There is also a small piece of tape on the interior of the jacket near the foot of the spine that does not appear to serve any function. The colors on the front panel and spine of the jacket are bright and unfaded. The jacket is not price clipped, and has a $4.95 price sticker at the top corner of the front flap (presumably covering the printed $4.50 price). Basis for the 1974 Sidney Lumet film Lovin' Molly. The book itself is tight, clean and square - a very nice copy. Briefly inscribed by the author on the front endpaper. Signed by Author(s).

Stated First Edition/First Printing with the correct code (H-N), in the 2nd state jacket (price-clipped with "495" stamp); A Very Good book in a Near Fine jacket. SIGNED and inscribed to western writer Ernie Bulow to the front free paper, with a unique inscription "the one the romantics usually like". A lovely copy of this novel, McMurtry's 2nd published work; scarce in the first printing and in this condition, rare with the unique inscription. This copy is in very good or better condition with occasional age-spotting to the exterior text block, some light rubbing to the spine ends, and a faint damp stain to the top exterior text block. Housed in a clean and bright near fine dust jacket that shows the usual sunning to the spine and some slight rubbing to the edges, else a fine example. Overall, a highly presentable and collectible copy of this early work. Not remaindered, not ex-library; will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Edition. McMurtry's second novel. Filmed by Sidney Lumet as Lovin' Molly in 1974. The book came out while the hit movie Hud was still in the theaters, so the book got a lot more attention than most second novels are accorded. But the book was controversial in McMurtry's native north Texas. The nearest big city to McMurtry's hometown of Archer City was Wichita Falls. The paper there wrote (Sept. 22, 1963), "The book editor won't be running a review of Leaving Cheyenne for every reviewer to whom the book was offered (men at that, not a Mrs. Grundy in the lot) has backed away from it after a hasty reading. For again the author relies heavily upon four-letter words and sexual intimacies to carry his story along. Mr. McMurtry is letting his youth show, for the young man has talent (though the new book is not well-written)." This book, along with Horseman, Pass By, McMurtry's first, are on critic A. C. Greene's list of the 50 best Texas books. First edition (stated). A near fine copy in the second state jacket, price-clipped at the top with the remnants of a price-sticker still visible. The price of the book was originally $4.50, but the publisher increased it at the last minute, and all reviews of the book cite the $4.95 price. It's likely that there are copies with unadulterated $4.50 prices, but they are very scarce. The jacket has faded somewhat at the spine, but is otherwise near fine. This copy was signed by McMurtry at a much later date. From the collection of Tom Garner.

Mr. McMurtry is letting his youth show, for the young man has talent (though the new book is not well-written)." First edition (stated). A near fine copy with a bit of spotting to the unbleached cloth. The jacket is the second issue, price-clipped at the top with a $4.95 price sticker at the bottom of the flap. The price of the book was originally $4.50, but the publisher increased it at the last minute, and all reviews of the book cite the $4.95 price. It's likely that there are copies with unadulterated $4.50 prices, but they are very scarce. The jacket has shallow chips at the top of the spine but virtually none of the spine-fading this title is prone to. Further, it is inscribed, likely at the time of publication or soon thereafter, to some Houstonians (McMurtry was teaching at Rice in Houston when this book was published): "To Sandra & Bobby Gerry?with the author's best wishes?Larry McMurtry." (Your cataloguer notes that at this early point in his career, McMurtry's inscription was in the style of 19th century autographs, which were often from "the author.").

First Edition 12, 308 pp. First edition. Octavo. Original cream publisher's cloth. Black and red lettering on the spine. Textblock also has on the front cover a red star. Top and bottom edge is trimmed; fore edge is untrimmed. A square tight copy. In a fine dust jacket. Dust jacket is not price clipped. A price sticker is still on the front flap ($4.95). Faint pencil markings throughout, otherwise a clean copy in very good condition. A light to medium stain from a newspaper clipping impressed over the author's signature on the front endpaper. Signed by the author and writer Walter Clemons on the free endpaper. Walter Clemons was an editor and book critic for Newsweek. In 1971 he wrote a review calling "Leaving Cheyenne" a "funny, wonderful, heartbreaking book." Clemons' signature is in the upper corner of the front free endpaper of this volume, and pencil markings, presumably made by Clemons, appear throughout the text. On the free endpaper, Larry McMurtry has also signed the book very legibly in blue ink. This is a first edition of McMurtry's great second novel. Despite what the title suggests, "Leaving Cheyenne" was set in Texas, and it includes a time span that stretches across ranching in the 1920s and World War II.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. McMurtry's second novel filmed as "Lovin' Molly." A Fine copy in a Fine, bright, unclipped dust jacket with $4.50 price and sticker shadow. This copy is inscribed to Mel (Edelstein, librarian of the Getty Museum) and signed "Larry". A superb copy. This is McMurtry's second novel about love and loss on the great plains of Texas. From 1920 s ranching to range cowboys and WWII grief, McMurtry is the undisputed father of the Western literary epic. Leaving Cheyenne traces the loves of three West Texas characters as they follow that sundown trail: Gideon Fry, the serious rancher; Johnny McCloud, the free-spirited cowhand; and Molly Taylor, the sensitive woman they both love and who bears them each a son. Told in alternating perspectives over sixty years, Leaving Cheyenne follows their dreams, secrets, and grief against a changing American landscape. Signed by Author(s).

FIRST EDITION. 208 x 145 mm. (8 1/4 x 5 3/4"). 5 p.l., 299, [7] pp. Publisher's cream-colored buckram, upper cover with a red sun symbol, spine with red and black lettering, original dust jacket. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR in ink on front free endpaper, and with ink signature of Walter Clemons in upper corner of same page; with pencilled notations (presumably by Clemons) and occasional underlining scattered throughout. âBuckram with a little edge soiling, preliminary leaves (including signature) affected by offsetting, a couple pages with minor thumbing or a faint fold, but still an excellent copy with an interesting association. Jacket spine a little sunned and panel edges slightly toned, a few minor chips to tail of spine and corners, price sticker over the printed price, faint red streak on lower wrapper, but in very nice condition overall. Set in West Texas (not Wyoming as the title suggests), McMurtry's second novel follows the lives of three intimately connected people--and the love triangle between them--over the course of about 40 years. The novel was adapted into the movie "Lovin' Molly" in 1974. Although Larry McMurtry (1936-2021) is best known for his works of fiction set in Texas and the American West, including his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Lonesome Dove," he was also an award-winning screenwriter, memoirist, antiquarian bookseller, and teacher. This appears to have been the personal copy of Walter Clemons (1929-94), a highly-regarded author and book critic who wrote about "Leaving Cheyenne" in a New York Times article in 1971, calling it a "funny, wonderful, heartbreaking book," and recalling a time when he "bought up five copies at a dollar each in Marboro [the country's largest retailer of "remainder" books] and passed them out" to other people. Clemons' great admiration for McMurtry's style, particularly in the present work, makes this an especially resonant association copy.
