These lectures initiated the psychological analysis of religion, and would go on to become his most popular publication. James made a point to examine individual experiences of religious people, rather than the general creeds and theologies of various religions when studying this topic. According to James, religion was generally a feeling that the world around us, the one observable to our senses, is related to one that is not observable by our senses. This unobservable phenomenon is what saves and regenerates the physical world around us, according to his theory. The first British edition and true first of the work.

See the bibliographical discussion on pages 555-6 of the Harvard edition. Wozniak catalog #62. It comprises his edited Gifford Lectures on natural theology, which were delivered at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1901 and 1902. The lectures concerned the nature of religion and the neglect of science in the academic study of religion. Soon after its publication, Varieties entered the Western canon of psychology and philosophy and has remained in print for over a century. It's perhaps considered the greatest book ever published on the psychology of religion.
