Occasional light wear & stains. Else good. Scarce. John Leech (1817-1864 in London) was an English caricaturist and illustrator. He is best known for his work for Punch, a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy. Leech catered to contemporary prejudices, such as anti-Americanism and antisemitism and supported acceptable social reforms. Leech's critical yet humorous cartoons on the Crimean War help shape public attitudes toward heroism, warfare, and Britons' role in the world. John Leech was born in London. His father, a native of Ireland, was the landlord of the London Coffee House on Ludgate Hill, "a man", on the testimony of those who knew him, "of fine culture, a profound Shakespearian, and a thorough gentleman." His mother was descended from the family of Richard Bentley. It was from his father that Leech inherited his skill with the pencil, which he began to use at a very early age. When he was only three, he was discovered by John Flaxman, who was visiting, seated on his mother's knee, drawing with much gravity. The sculptor admired his sketch, adding, "Do not let him be cramped with lessons in drawing; let his genius follow its own bent; he will astonish the world"?advice which was followed. A mail-coach, done when he was six years old, is already full of surprising vigour and variety in its galloping horses. Leech was educated at Charterhouse School, where William Makepeace Thackeray, his lifelong friend, was a fellow pupil, and at sixteen he began to study for the medical profession at St Bartholomew's Hospital, where he won praise for the accuracy and beauty of his anatomical drawings. He was then placed under a Mr Whittle, an eccentric practitioner, the original of "Rawkins" in Albert Smith's Adventures of Mr Ledbury, and afterwards under Dr John Cockle; but gradually he drifted into the artistic profession. His nickname also being "Blicky" stuck with him during his life, along with being famous. Signed by Author.

(1824-1902) Autograph Letter Signed to Punch illustrator, John Leech, about illustrating for the periodical 'Once a Week'. Camden Square, N.W., 28 December 1859. Two pages, signed, folded as sent. Very good condition, light handling marks only. A professional letter from the travel and topographical artist Edwin Thomas Dolby to John Leech, written during the first year of publication of Once a Week. Dolby states that Messrs. Colnaghi of Pall Mall have introduced him to Mr. Bradbury 'with a view to my assisting in the illustrations of Once a Week,' and seeks Leech's consideration. He outlines his credentials, noting that he accompanied the 'Russian expedition in 1854, which I fully illustrated,' and that he possesses sketches and memoranda from Sweden, Denmark, North Germany, the Baltic, and elsewhere on the Continent. He offers references from 'all the principal artists and publishers of the day.' Dolby's reference to the Russian expedition relates to his large folio publication Dolby's Sketches in the Baltic (London: M. & N. Hanhart for P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., 1854), issued during the Baltic operations of the Crimean War. That work, published under Colnaghi's auspices, established him as a draughtsman of war and travel subjects. The present letter shows him leveraging those published credentials in seeking illustration work for the newly founded weekly. Once a Week was established in July 1859 by Bradbury & Evans following their separation from Charles Dickens, and Leech was among its principal illustrators from the outset. Dated December 1859, this letter belongs to the immediate formation period of the journal, when contributors were being assembled for the new illustrated paper. Signed by Author(s).

Original watercolour for Punch, c.1850-1853, published in Pictures of Life and Character, Second Series (Bradbury & Evans, 1854). Watercolour and pencil on wove paper, signed lower left, titled in the artist's hand at lower centre. Image 310 × 360 mm (sheet 330 × 510 mm). Unmounted, loosely housed in an archival sleeve; very light marginal toning only, the colours bright and unfaded. Very good. This original watercolour was the design for John Leech's Punch cartoon 'Performers after a Respectable Funeral,' later engraved for Punch, or the London Charivari between 1850 and 1853 and reissued in Pictures of Life and Character, Second Series (1854). The composition shows a group of 'professional mourners' relaxing in a tavern after a funeral. Their sombre top hats, black scarves, and grave expressions the props of their trade are replaced by laughter, drink, and smoke; the innkeeper stands to one side, half-amused, as the men discard the trappings of faux grief and fall into boisterous camaraderie. The published engraving, as reproduced in Pictures of Life and Character, carries the subtitle 'Costume: Mourning,' identifying it as part of Leech's series on the absurdities of fashion and custom. The finished wood-engraved version (executed by the Dalziel Brothers or Swain) tightens the linework and adds cross-hatching, but follows this original composition almost exactly, confirming it as Leech's working drawing for publication. Leech's Punch watercolours of this nature are held in institutional collections but rarely show up in commerce. Signed by Author(s).
