Eleven volumes. The complete set of Secker & Warburg's Uniform Edition issued with the variant dust wrappers designed by Denis Piper [1928-1987]. The bulk of the Uniform Edition was issued in the publisher's generic green and white wrappers, however, between 1959 and 1967 Secker periodically issued those same volumes in these striking Denis Piper-designed dust wrappers. Good examples of the individual volumes are hard to find and complete sets of all eleven volumes are very rarely encountered. Whilst some copies with the Piper-designed wrappers went to the trade, the majority were issued to schools and public libraries and unmarked examples in good condition are scarce. These eleven copies were issued to the trade, only one of the wrappers is price-clipped and all eleven volumes are in very good to near Fine condition. Save for a one volume with a bookplate and another with a inscription all are in nice condition . Whilst the list of books issued in the Uniform Edition often includes Orwell's 'Shooting an Elephant' there was no issue of that title in a Denis Piper dust wrapper; this is the complete set of Denis Piper's work for the Edition. Cloth is lightly soiled, gently rounded at corner and spine ends. Slight forward lean. Text block edges toned. Hint of toning internally, most markedly in endpaper hinges. In its original, price clipped dust jacket, toned and a little brittle, rubbed and bumped all round edges, sunned over spine, with a few mild marks. Dust jacket now protected in an archival quality Mylar wrapper fitted without the use of tape or adhesives. Orwell's war time extended essay on England and England's special problems in an age when, in his analysis, private capitalism was dissolving into a classless, ownerless society. He argues of the impossibility of winning the the war against Germany without far-reaching social reconstruction and, counter to much contemporary thinking, that any attempt towards socialism was doomed unless it took account of English history and character.

Edges at head and tail of board spine are rubbed and with beginnings of fraying. Tiny stain on the front board panel. Minimal scuffs on fore-edge tips. External page edges are age-toned and dusty in appearance and with small amount of foxing. Text pages are age-toned, else clean, no foxing. Text block is snug. Dust jacket is sunned, more so on extremities. Shelf-wear soil overall, more so on spine and fore-edge folds which are also creased and scuffed, but not rubbed through. Edges at head and tail of jacket spine and tips of fore-edge corners have minimal creasing and faint rubs, but no loss. Price of 2s. net is intact. A three-part essay lambasting Britain's outdated class system which only a socialist reform would boost the haltering war effort against Nazi Germany. The first section, "England Your England," begins with the inimitable opening line: "As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me." First edition, first printing in book form. Publisher's original white textured cloth with dark green titles to the spine, in the Zec designed dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding clean and square, the spine a touch rolled. The contents, toned to the wartime paper stock, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked price-clipped dustwrapper that has a couple of short closed tears with associated creasing and mild toning of the spine. Not price-clipped (2s net to the spine and front flap). The first edition was published 19 February 1941 in an edition of 5000 copies, a second printing was required in March.
