A scrapbook of works by Stow Wengenroth, who is considered one of the finest American lithographers of the 20th Century, and was called "America's greatest living artist working in black and white" by the American painter, Andrew Wyeth. Signed by the artist on the front pastedown, with some dampstaining: "Stow Wengenroth, Bayport Long Island N. Y." 28 small clippings of artwork by Stow Wengenroth published in the Theatre Magazine from 1929 to 1931; one newspaper clipping from the Morning Telegraph in 1928; one unused art proof submitted to the Theatre Magazine in 1929; one reproduction of a book illustration; four photographs of Stow and his workplace; one photograph of Stow's first wife; an original lithograph by the artist, unsigned, undated, of an untitled fisherman's shack; a hand drawn birthday card for his second wife; a booklet for an exhibition of Stow's works; and an issue of American Artist, for which he drew the cover art. Notes in ink on the blank scrapbook leaves. Half red cloth over black cloth boards, with moderate shelfwear, rubbing, and spots of discoloration. Housed in a hand made paper slipcase. Good binding.

Add to basketHaghe features prominently in William Day's entry in the Oxford DNB, in which their firm's publication of Robert's 'Holy Land' (1842-49) is described as 'the most ambitious lithographic work ever published', for which 'Haghe, praised by Roberts for the faithful and artistic interpretation of his drawings, must bear most of the credit for the success of this publication'. See also the entry on the recipient Charles Manby (1804-1884), Secretary of the Institution of Civil Engineers. 2pp, 12mo. On the first leaf of a 12mo bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with strip of mount adhering to edge of blank second leaf. Addressed to 'Charles Mamby [sic] Esquire' and signed 'L Haghe'. Marked as 'Entered' at top left of first leaf. He has great pleasure in lending 'a large water colour drawing the only one I have by me' for 'your conversatione', and will send it 'to the institution 25 great George Street before the 26th'. He also thanks him for putting his name 'in the free list at the adelphi and Haymarket theatres'. He would 'in several instances have made use of the priviledge [sic]' had he been aware of it, and will now do so.
