Known as the Professor of Secrets, Giambattista della Porta [1535-1615] was an Italian polymath and scholar who was at the forefront of the renaissance and the scientific revolution, published his most famous work, Magia Naturalis in 1558. Immediately popular, it was republished five Latin editions within ten years and subsequent languages, appearing in English for the first time in 1658. His book is an example of pre-Baconian science, with sources from learning of Pliny the Elder, Theophrastus, along with his own insights and observations. Natural Magic, a treatise in 20 books, focused "less a way to improve one's own mind or to communicate with divine forces, and more a means to manipulate objects and human beings. Porta developed this secular approach to magic in the face of ecclesiastical persecution," according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. The twenty books of Natural Magic include chapters on Invisible Writing, Physical, Static, and Pneumatic Experiments, Wonders of the Lode Stone and Counterfeiting Glorious Stones, Production of New Plants, and the Causes of Wonderful Things. In Book XVII, Giambattista is the first to add a concave lens to the 'camera obscura' after experimenting with concave and convex lenses.

Seller: Emerald Booksellers, New York, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. EARLY PRINTED ALCHEMICAL TEXT. This is an early edition of Porta's first work, essentially a continuation of the medieval book of secrets and experiments. This is the third Plantinian edition of this book on natural magic (first edition: Naples, 1558). The early editions consisted of 4 books which were increased to 20 in the amplified edition of 1580. "Although Porta makes much use of the words magic and magician, this book is rather strictly limited to the natural variety and is more prosaic and less sensational than might be expected" (cf. Thorndike). Title set within a decorative border. BOOK DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION: 19th Cent. leather, gilt spine, front board detached but present, gilt-edged pages, int. VG. The endpapers of this book contain not particularly legible Latin handwriting of the period. The writing appears to be a medical or philosophical manuscript, possibly related to natural philosophy or alchemical principles. There are mentions of aqua (water), spiritus (spirit), and medicina (medicine), which suggest some relation to early chemistry or medical practice. Terms like experimentum (experiment) and observationes (observations) indicate a scientific approach. Our impression is that a reader is summarizes reactions to Magiae Naturalis. RARITY: Uncommon: USTC identifies 29 copies in world libraries. Three copies are in the US (Johns Hopkins, NLM, Newberry Lib - U of Chicago). RBH lists ten copies that have sold at auction in the last century. Platin printed Magiae Naturalis in octavo for this 1561 edition (his third edition) and then in four 16mo editions in 1564, 1567, 1576 and 1585, all in Latin, and a Dutch edition in 1566. Of some of these editions we know that 1250 copies were printed, and this may well have been the figure for all. From the Plantin-Moretus accounts it would appear that Plantin circulated the book in northern Europe. PROVENANCE: Ex-Libris from Joseph M. Gleason. In the 1870s Gleason was a Californian Catholic priest, educationalist, historian, and collector of books and photographs. This book is from the Arthur C. Greenberg History of Chemistry Library. Giambattista della Porta (1535 1615) was an Italian philosopher, alchemist, comedy writer, scientist and polymath. He was the author of a number of works on memory, physiognomy, philosophy and magic. The Magiae Naturalis, or Natural Magic, was originally composed of four books and it was first published in 1558. It was then expanded to twenty books in 1589. The work was popular in Europe and it was translated in modern European languages (Italian, French, Dutch and English). The work deals with popular science, cosmology, geology, optics, plant products, medicine, poisons, cooking, alchemy, distillation, glass colouring, glazes and ceramics, magnetic properties, cosmetics, gunpowder and cryptography. Giambattista della Porta draws both on the works of Ancient authors, such as Aristotle and Theophrastus, and contemporary works on magic and science but avoids discussing religion and ceremonial magic. Porta defends natural magic, distinguishing it from the superstitious he deems of demonological origin, by extending its field of investigation to philosophy, hoping to translate it into action. For Porta, magic was not a way to improve one's self and to communicate with the divine, but a means to manipulate both men and things with crafty tricks. The natural magus is described by Porta as a trickster with the experience of the alchemist, with the education of a humanist and with a strong command of mathematics and astrology. According to Porta, as outlined in the second chapter of the first book of the Magiae Naturalis (Quid fit Magia) the magus must be rich, well-educated and hard working. In this work, we find points of contact with Agrippa von Nettesheim's De occulta philosophia. Bibliography: Ferguson, II, 216. Duveen 481. Caillet 8852.

Add to basketEarly edition of a famous work on natural magic, discussing a wide variety of topics, from invisible writing to alchemy and cosmetics. It became the most popular treatise on the subject in the 16th century and was translated into many European languages. The present Latin edition, however, is one of the first editions with an index. It is also quite rare on the market, as we have only been able to trace one other copy in sales records. The work is divided in four books, which contain instructions for gardening, like tree grafting and the dyeing of flowers; recipes for fireworks, including torches that cannot be extinguished by the wind; hair dyes, make-up, and witches' ointments; alchemy and metallurgy; and optical instruments such as mirrors, lenses, and magic lanterns. The text also includes a number of experiments. Magiae naturalis is a continuation of the books of secrets and experiments from the late Middle Ages, and was written when the author was just fifteen years old. It was first published in Naples in 1558, and republished 15 more times within the next two decades by publisher's across Western Europe. Due to its popularity, the author expanded the work from four to twenty books in 1589. The present edition, however, was published before this, and therefore only includes four books. It is the 6th and final edition by Plantin and is a textual reprint of his 1576 edition, which was the first to include an index. A later shelfmark label ("1115") mounted on the front pastedown, with the bookplates of the Bibliothèque de Mr. E.M. Mangel, and Gordon Willis Jones (1915-1987) mounted below, a later annotation ("1104") on the 4th free flyleaf in the front, and near-contemporary calculations on the first free flyleaf in the back. The vellum is slightly soiled. The work is somewhat browned throughout, a tear in the outer margin of the title page, which has been repaired with tape on the verso, and a tear in the outer margin of page 289 that has been repaired with Japanese paper, slightly affecting a few words.
