8vo, pp. [viii], 8, 17-32, 25-40, 49-64, 57-72; title and last leaf rather dusty; stain in margin of p. 7, else a good working copy; in modern cloth-backed boards. First edition, although there are two different issues with quite different pagination the other paginates [viii], 8, 17-32, 25-72. The consistency of press-figures (even when the page number is altered from 57 to 49) suggests that only the pagination was changed, and the text was not reset. It seems probable that the page numbers in this state represent an earlier one than the more coherently-paginated issue. First performed at Drury Lane in April 1749. This is an adaptation of Voltaire's Mérope. Hill's verse dedication is addressed to the memory of a friend (addressed as St John, but clearly not Bolingbroke, who did not die until 1751); he also contributes a long preface to the reader, in which he answers Voltaire's own preface to his play, where the Frenchman had said the English were 'incapable of Tragedy; nay, even of Painting, or of Musick'. The prologue was spoken (though not apparently composed) by Garrick. Press-figures: 3-3, 26-3, 28-2, 57-3, 67-2, 69-3.

Frontespizio xilografico figurato; tregi xilografici istoriati dallo stesso De Carolis n.t.
