This is one of Vice Admiral Mack's Destroyer Series; this book covers the USS Lawrence in the Mediterranean in World War II. The author served aboard several destroyers in several major engagements during WWII, including ASW duty during Operation Torch. He commanded the Seventh Fleet during the Vietnam War. William Paden Mack (August 6, 1915 January 15, 2003) was a vice admiral in the United States Navy. He was Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland from June 16, 1972 to his retirement on August 1, 1975. He was a 1937 graduate of the Naval Academy. He was later a writer. Among his many writing achievements are three Naval Institute professional guides as well as a noted biography of Commodore Kilburnie. In World War II, an allied ship would be extremely vulnerable to attack if it sailed into the Straits of Messina, which separate Sicily from the southern tip of Italy. With enemy artillery firing from both sides, along with the inevitable threat of torpedoes, allied ships would face nearly impossible odds. It is the summer of 1943, and now is the time for the Allies to land their armies. The crew of the destroyer USS Lawrence has become accustomed to long odds. Led by their captain, Jackson Sperry, they sail into a Mediterranean sea controlled in part by the Axis powers. Whether they are traversing minefields or listening for the screaming of Stuka dive bombers, the crew of the Lawrence must act effectively if they intend to survive at all.

The town was formerly known as Messina, and in 2002 its name was changed to correct a colonial misspelling of the name of the Musina people who previously lived in the region. Located in the heart of the bushveld with its hunting farms and diamonds mine, on the major trucking route north, it attracts a conglomeration of disparate peoples. They are drawn to this town by the opportunities it offers, be it working in the mines or on the farms, policing the porous border, smuggling contraband and alien immigrants, or prostitution. In his photographs of individuals, families, interiors, landscapes and incidental details, Hugo reflects on the wounds and scars of race, class and nationality that persist here, on the border of Zimbabwe, a country in the process of self-destructing.
