In 8° (cm 14x20,5), pagine 96, illustrato da 60 tavole a colori su sfondo nero fuori dal testo Le preziose immagini, che artisti pazienti racchiusero negli spazi minimi delle miniature, ci ricordano quanto varie siano state le intonazioni tecniche ed espressive nel mare magnum della figurazione artistica. Quegli esigui dipinti su rame, pergamena, porcellana, avorio in cui si sunteggiavano ritratti, vedute o soggetti di genere - che nel corso di oltre tre secoli hanno accompagnato i ben più numerosi prodotti della pittura maggiore, convengono fascinosamente verso un mondo ovattato, campo privilegiato per un'arte di occasione, sia essa di tono ufficiale che di più intimo godimento. Il respiro europeo della miniatura è ben riproposto dalla scelta antologica di questo volume, che offre ad un pubblico più vasto rispetto ai soliti conoscitori gli esemplari migliori dei musei napoletani di San Martino e Capodimonte.
