Executed in a much superior stile than any Thing that has ever appeared in this Kingdom. Printed for C. Cooke, London, circa 1790, Volume I: 1-460 pp, Volume II: 460-990 pp, full original leather, 15.5 x 10.25", elephant folios. In good condition. Spines handsomely rebacked with original spine labels reattached. Very nice and sturdy. Light wear to extremities with moderate scuffing to corners. Original leather is peeling along edges. A fine leather was used for this binding. Remnants from a bookplate on pastedowns. Interiors are bright and clean. Light offsetting from plates with minor instance of age stain. Free of known markings. Lacking map of West Indies 517 pp, Map of United States, 492 pp. all else complete. Folding maps are in good working order. Internally fresh and attractively bound. A solid set. Please see photos. Early edition. Collated, not quite complete. This book went through six editions in the 1790's and was revised to reflect new discoveries and English interest in the colony of New Holland. Much of the content deals with the South Pacific, Cook's Voyages, and Australia (New Holland). Many of the illustrations were derived from Cook's voyages, and were the most generally available representations of the natives of the Pacific Northwest including the Salish, Tasmania, New Zealand, Hawaii & the Pacific accessible to the public at the time.

Not all of the plates are numbered, and they are not in consecutive order, as mentioned in the directions to the binders. Page 618 lists 60 numbered plates and 25 unnumbered ones. Signatures: [A] B-7R . Printed in double columns. Publisher's monogram on title page. "Directions to the book-binder": page 618; ."List of the subscribers": pages [619]-[620]. Wonderfully illustrated plates, of not only animals and plants, but of Human anatomy and even samples of Human emotion. Page 421 mentions the presence of insects in amber.

Tear to pages 595 and 827, affecting text. The front engraved frontispiece is torn, lacking almost half, with the remainder wrinkled. Minor loss to the corner margin of the title. Single leaf maps are in very good condition. Maps are in fair condition with heavy wrinkling to fold, tears; The Chart map, maps of Africa, North America, Italy, Europe and England are in extremely poor condition with heavy tearing and wrinkling. The engraving plates have old tears, restored by an earlier hand. Sold by subscription, with list of subscribers at rear. No edition stated, presumed to be the 2nd edition, printed 1789-1790 (1787-1788 was the 1st ed). This book went through 6 editions in the 1790s and was revised to reflect new discoveries and English interest in the colonization of New Holland. The book is divided along geographical lines. This is the chapter on Australia with subheadings: 'New Holland' (Australia), 'New South Wales', 'Botany Bay', 'Port Jackson', 'Late Accounts respecting the colony at Port Jackson, as far as Dec. 16, 1791', and 'Norfolk Islan…d'. Includes three important Alexander Hogg copper plate engravings: 1. "A View in Port Jackson, New South Wales", T. Webley sculp, Pub. by Alexr. Hogg May 1, 1793. This engraving was first used to illustrate the title page for 'Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales', by Surgeon General John White, published in London in 1790. It depicts indigenous Australians involved in fishing, with one of the canoes with a fire burning inside on a flat stone, so that fish could be cooked as soon as it was caught. Trove 47997. 2. "Captains Hunter, Collins & Johnston, with Governor Phillip, Surgeon White, & c. Visiting a Distressed Female Native of New South Wales, at a Hut near Port Jackson" (published by Alexr. Hogg). Trove 7890412. 3. "A Man, woman & Children of New South Wales", Drawn from a Sketch taken on the Spot, Goldar, sculp, published by Alexr. Hogg. After the engraving by William Blake in 'An historical journal of the transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island' by John Hunter. Trove 8953998. Disbound section, complete in itself, 4to, pages 9 - 32, with 3 full page b&w plates. A four inch tear at p 19; the third plate detached, slt dusty at edges, o/w very good. We cannot ascertain what this is disbound from, but appears not to be from Bankes or Millar, as it measures only 26.5 cm tall.
