First edition of this unusual Graham Greene publication, bearing the publisher's presentation inscription, "so happy to have met you, Irene Brin. Roma, 29 Settembre 1961". An inserted note of provenance states that the book was purchased from the bookseller Tindley & Chapman, who stated that the original seller insisted the inscription was to Graham Greene himself. This book-length appreciation of the Italian painter Nino Caffè expands on the piece Greene wrote for the catalogue for Caffè's exhibition at the Knoedler Gallery in New York in 1953. Caffè's illustrations feature comical depictions of Catholic priests and seminarians ("pretini"), who Green refers to as "blackbeetles". Greene converted to Catholicism in 1926 and had a complex relationship with his faith, fraught with doubt and contradiction. "Though Greene later objected to being called a 'Catholic novelist', he became celebrated for employing religious themes in his works, praised by Catholic critics during his lifetime for the powerful way in which his novels explore the subjects of sin, damnation, evil, and divine forgiveness."
