Born in 1854 in Bergen, Norway, Rasmus Rasmussen was an accomplished sailor by the time he signed on to the ship Debora in 1879 headed to Aldabra, an atoll in the Indian Ocean where the group on board hoped to establish a Norwegian colony based on the teachings of Hans Nielsen Hauge, a Norwegian minister. Before reaching its destination, however, the expedition ended prematurely in Madagascar, with some aboard the Debora remaining there, while others settled in the British colony of Port Natal (Durban) . Rasmussen wrote an account of the journey under the name Sailor James. "Viking" is an account of his journey as a working sailor aboard the ship Viking, a Norwegian replica that set sail in 1893 bound for the Chicago World Exhibition (1894) . Said to be the only Viking ship replica in modernity and the only Viking ship to set sail in more than 1, 000 years, it is now located in Geneva, Illinois, its full restoration stalled due to lack of funding. ;
