Conceived by publisher Takejiro Hasegawa to help Japanese children learn Western languages (primarily English) when Japan was once again opening to the West. He did this by using well known Japanese folk tales set in a Western format from right to left and using moving type faces while also using the Japanese mitusmata paper, created from the bark of a plant by the same name, creating chirimen-bon or crepe paper which has a textile feel, using the fukumo-toi pouch binding format, using traditional woodblock printing and the traditional Yamoto toji binding with silk or ribbon ties stabbed in two places. These works were also printed on regular paper and bound, however the Japanese format became very popular and collected by Westerners.
