Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the works of Macrobius, a philosopher and public figure of late antiquity. The book begins by discussing Macrobius's life, name, reputation, and writings. The author argues that Macrobius was born in North Africa in the late 4th century C.E. Although he eventually wrote mostly in Latin, Macrobius was highly educated in Greek language and literature and was familiar with the philosophical and rhetorical traditions of both the Greek and Roman worlds. Macrobius's most famous work, the Saturnalia, consists of a series of imaginary discussions on a wide range of topics, including religion, philosophy, literature, and history. The discussions are framed as taking place at a dinner party hosted by a wealthy Roman named Vettius Praetextatus. The participants in the discussions include some of the most famous intellectuals of Macrobius's time, such as the philosopher Symmachus and the poet Avianus. The author argues that the Saturnalia is an important source of information about the intellectual and cultural life of late antiquity. It is also a valuable resource for understanding Macrobius's own views on a variety of topics. The book includes a detailed analysis of Macrobius's philosophical and religious beliefs. The author argues that Macrobius was a Neoplatonist who believed in the existence of a single, transcendent God. He also argues that Macrobius was influenced by Christianity, but that he did not convert to the new religion. In addition to the Saturnalia, Macrobius also wrote a commentary on Cicero's Somnium Scipionis. This commentary is an important source of information about Cicero's philosophical views, and it also contains valuable insights into Macrobius's own philosophical thought. The author argues that Macrobius's commentary on the Somnium Scipionis is a significant contribution to the history of philosophy and that it deserves to be studied alongside the works of the great philosophers of antiquity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Leather bound. Condition: Very Good. A more modern rebinding in green leather, five raised bands, gilt lettering with "Macrobii Opera, Bronovius, Lugd.Bat. 1670." Back blank endpaper has a few tears, frontispiece page has a one by two inch chips to lower right, front endpapers have some chipping with several brown stains at edges. I believe the stains come from the rebinder decorating the textblock with red and brown splotchers (with some success). Binding is very tight, pages are very clean with no foxing, and leather is very sharp being relatively new.

Softcover. Condition: Fair. Late 16th century edition of Macrobius' works (Opera, in Latin), printed by the venerable Plantin press. The works in this edition include: Commentarius in Somnium Scipionis Saturnaliorum (in seven books) De Differentiis et Societatibus Graeci Latinique verbi Libellus. (This is a fragmentary work, and not complete; it is considered a lost work as a whole). Wikipedia - Macrobius Ambrosius Theodosius, usually referred to as Macrobius (fl. c. AD 400), was a Roman provincial who lived during the early fifth century, during late antiquity, the period of time corresponding to the Later Roman Empire, and when Latin was as widespread as Greek among the elite. He is primarily known for his writings, which include the widely copied and read Commentarii in Somnium Scipionis ("Commentary on the Dream of Scipio") about Somnium Scipionis, which was one of the most important sources for Neoplatonism in the Latin West during the Middle Ages; the Saturnalia, a compendium of ancient Roman religious and antiquarian lore; and De differentiis et societatibus graeci latinique verbi ("On the Differences and Similarities of the Greek and Latin Verb") Provenance - At the rear is the signature of Willem Cornelis Ackerdijck Junior, a Dutch jurist, author, historian and lawyer. He does have a Wikipedia dedicated to him. This book, his inscription dated 1777 and place location noted, was his while at the University of Utrecht (which he graduated from in 1779). Green silk bookmark bound-in. With the woodcut publisher's device on the title page and with woodcut initials. Edited by Joh. Pontanus. With an index and notes by J. Meursius. Adams 57. Graesse 330. Oxford Classical Dictionary, "Macrobius", 906-907. Macrobius was a North African writer and Neoplatonist. His surviving three works are the Saturnalia, a dialogue, a commentary on Cicero's the Dream of Scipio, and fragments of a grammar on the differences between Greek and Latin words. The Dream of Scipio is of special importance because it expounds neoplatonist theories on the cosmos, astronomy, the nature of numbers, and humankind's place in the universe. Macrobius was an important source for these views in the Middle Ages, as the ability to read ancient Greek dwindled due to the fall of the Roman Empire. A handsome copy of this important work in classical philosophy and ancient astronomy. Very Good or better with a pre-19th century name on the title page, this owner annotated a few leaves, two gatherings have a faint dampstain to their bottom edge.

This philosophical masterpiece delves into the scholarly conversations engaged in by prominent Roman figures during the festive period of Saturnalia. The observations recorded in this volume range from the nature of time and existence, to the meaning of words and the power of language itself. Through these lively discussions, the author demonstrates the intellectual curiosity cultivated by these learned men during the first century of the Roman Empire. Their perspectives on the world, grounded in the classical tradition, explore the foundations of human knowledge and the limits of human understanding. Engaging with the ideas presented in this book is an invitation to broaden one's perspective and gain insights into the enduring principles that have shaped our world. This book chronicles a series of conversations that took place at a symposium held over several days during the Saturnalia, an ancient Roman festival at the end of December. The symposium was hosted by Vettius Praetextatusâ"a renowned nobleman from the 4th century ADâ"and brought together some of the era's most prominent scholars and public figures. The conversations, which centered around diverse topics related to history, literature, religion, and philosophy, were recorded and later compiled into this volume. As such, the book provides a window into the intellectual climate of the Roman Empire during the late classical period. In addition to offering a glimpse into the social and intellectual dynamics of the symposium's attendees, this book is also valuable for its preservation of ancient knowledge and ideas. The conversations enshrined within its pages cover a wide range of subjects, including the origins of Roman festivals, the nature of the gods, the meaning of dreams, and the significance of historical events. Considered one of the most important collections of its kind, the insights contained within have had a profound impact on the development of Western thought and continue to be studied by scholars today. Macrobius was one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West, and his conception of the world geography as an equatorial and meridional ocean (depicted in the book) dividing the earth into four quarters, dominated scientific thinking on world geography in the Middle Ages. - His "Saturnalia" deals with Roman feasts in form of table-talk at a banquet in Rome, giving information of food and drink and their preparation.and is fascinatingly rich in philological, historical, antiquarian and scientific lore, throwing a clear light on the interests and taste of the period.
