"The cemetery of el-Gerzeh (dated to c. 3600-3350 BC) excavated in 1910-11, seemingly provided the first evidence of Predynastic 'Naqada culture' outside its previously documented social field in Upper Egypt. Moreover, the distinctive character of the assemblage later led Petrie to use the cemetery as the type-site for his 'Gerzean' culture. Despite the apparent significance of the cemetery, the excavation report was brief. Fortunately, the tomb cards from the excavation still exist and almost 300 artefacts from the site have been accessioned into several museums. This book brings together this material for the first time and by utilizing recent archaeological and anthropological theories reassesses its significance. Salonen machte 1933 Abitur. Er studierte an der Universität Helsinki bei Professor Knut Tallqvist . Nach seinem Bachelor-Abschluss im Jahr 1936 setzte er seine Studien in Deutschland und später in den USA fort, wo er 1947 an das Oriental Institute der University of Chicago wechselte. Dort nahm er am Chicago Assyrian Dictionary Projekt unter Professor A. Leo Oppenheim teil , mit Schwerpunkt auf etymologischen Bezügen. Salonen promovierte 1950. Von 1949 bis 1978 war er außerordentlicher Professor für assyrische und semitische Philologie an der Universität Helsinki. Seine Forschungsinteressen konzentrierten sich auf die materielle Kultur und das Alltagsleben Mesopotamiens , wie seine Wasserfahrzeuge, Fahrzeuge und Türen; Ein großer Teil seiner Arbeit besteht aus thematischen Glossaren der Fachterminologie. 1943 veröffentlichte er die erste finnische Übersetzung des Gilgamesch-Epos . Er interessierte sich auch für die Geschichte Persiens und des alten Ägyptens und beherrschte Arabisch. 1957 veröffentlichte er zusammen mit Jussi Aro die erste finnische Übersetzung des Korans . A scarce offprint and presentation copy, inscribed in Hungarian on the first page to the author's mentor, Professor Lajos Fekete, with the inscription dated 18 November 1967. We have not traced any copies in institutional collections. An important historical source, inscription RY 506 was discovered at Murayghan (or Mureighan), east of the upper Wadi Tathlith, and concerns Abraha's defeat of the northern Arabian tribe Ma'add in 662 of the Sabaean era. Lajos Fekete (1891-1969) was "a towering figure in the field of Ottoman history and an internationally acknowledged authority in Ottoman-Persian paleography and diplomacy" (Encyclopaedia Iranica). In 1948, he joined the faculty of the University of Budapest, where he taught Robert Simon (b. 1939) oriental and classical philology. At the time of presentation, the author has stricken through the names of G. and J. Ryckmans, two Belgian Arabists who also conducted research on RY 506 and Sabaean history.
