Condition: Fine. New York, December 16, 1976., 1976. Fine. - Over 75 words typed on his personal 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide embossed stationery. Responding to Jean Dalrymple's inquiry as to whether he'd have an interest in acquiring a sculpture by Picasso for himself or to donate to a museum, Nathan Cummings writes "Dear Jean, In reply to your note of December 1, regarding Picasso's 'Tete de Femme,' which Claude Picasso would like to sell, please ask Mrs. Gary to send me a photograph, indicating size, and advising of the price, too." Mrs. Gary was the art consultant Dorothy Hale Gary who is handling the work for Claude Picasso. Cummings goes on to elaborate "I don't know what I can do, if anything, but let me see what we're talking about." Signed "Nate". Folded for mailing, else fine. Together with the retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's letter of December 1st. Born Komiensky, the Jewish Canadian-American businessman, investor and philanthropist Nathan Cummings (1896-1985) was the founder of Consolidated Foods, later to be named Sara Lee Corporation. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, he and his family moved to Waltham, Massachusetts in 1905. Nathan studied in a dry goods economist training school in New York City. He rejoined his family, who had moved back to Montreal, and sold shoes from the age of 15, subsequently working as a traveling salesman for a shoe manufacturer. He set up his own shoe factory, which unfortunately floundered during the depression. Undeterred he invested in the Canadian biscuit and candy company McCormicks, a successful business which he sold to Weston. He later worked for and acquired the coffee, tea & sugar chain C.D. Kenny Company and expanded his holdings creating a business empire which eventually became Consolidated Foods Corporation which was subsequently renamed the Sara Lee Corporation. He had little interest in art until, as he said, "An advertising man convinced me that I should have a painting made of the view from my window." Cummings liked it so much he had another painting done of the view at night and his interest in collecting was born. Cummings went on to collect French Impressionist paintings, modern sculpture, ancient Peruvian ceramics, and the works of Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Greoges Braque, among others. He became a major philanthropist donating to hospitals, universities, arts organizations. He endowed the Nathan Cummings Arts Center at Stanford University and the Joanne and Nathen Cummings Art Center at Connecticut College in New London. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Signed by the author. Near-fine with a bit of sunning to spine, otherwise clean and tight (351 pages). Laid in is a four-page Editor's Note. Number 121 of a first printing of 1,000 sold to subscribers, of which half were eaten by rats while in storage in Normandy. The author, French poet and painter Marc Sabatier-Leveque, began writing this massive poem at the age of 14; he rewrote it when he was 22 and it was published in 1955 thanks to André Malraux. Illustrated with 16 portraits of the author by Pablo Picasso, who was the initiator of the subscription and said to the poet: "You are the one who brought French literature out of its Louis-Philippard style." Malraux, who considered this text to be "one of the major works of the 20th century," wrote to its young author: "You will be discovered in 30 years." Sabathier-Leveque died at the age of 37 without publishing another book. A scarce title, made rare (perhaps unique) by the author's signature at the top of the half-title page. Signed by Author(s).
