Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Edition Stated. 337 Pages. An as new gift quality book with flawless interior text pages. Five inked-lines of inscription on the title page. November, A.D. 439, at Ravenna, Italy, capital of the Western Roman Empire. Surgeon Getorius Asterius and his wife Arcadia are called to examine the body of Behan, a monk seemingly drowned in a penitential rite gone awry. The couple discovers a prophecy text in Behan's hut, suggesting that a document of earth-shaking importance will soon be revealed. Shortly after, during an impromptu visit to the new mausoleum of Galla Placidia, mother of Emperor Valentinian III, a hidden niche violently reveals the Last Will and Testament of Jesus Christ, purportedly dictated to Pontius Pilate's secretary while the procurator is outside addressing the crowd. The stunning terms of the will are an expression of Christ's supreme love and forgiveness, yet if implemented by the Bishop of Rome, His vicar, they now will bring apocalyptic chaos to the twin Roman Empires. Placidia supresses the papyrus while palace librarian Theokritos tests its authenticity. After three witnesses are murdered, Getorius suggests to Placidia that Rabbi David ben Zadok, of the Judean community, evaluates the text and predict consequences if the document is made public. His response: empire-wide civil war, with Christians and Judeans pitted against each other. In the interval of waiting for Theokritos's report, Getorius is arrested, falsely accused of dissecting the body of the monk, leaving Arcadia alone to deal with the papyrus. Late in December, delayed by winter storms, Brenos, abbot of Behan's monastery, arrives from Gaul, ostensibly to bury his monk, but actually to reveal the will at the Nativity Vigil Mass. Frantic at finding that the papyrus has been prematurely discovered, Brenos meets with Smyrna, his mysterious contact at Ravenna, in an effort to locate the will. In the last late hours of December 24, it is still not certain that fanatical members of a religious order will not succeed in establishing a theocracy designed to supplant the dying Western Empire. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Edwin Smith Papyrus The Edwin Smith Papyrus (Lockwood Press, 2012) is a modern scholarly edition of the ancient Egyptian surgical treatise, edited and translated by Gonzalo M. Sanchez and Edmund S. Meltzer. This definitive version updates earlier translations and adds comprehensive medical and philological commentaries on the world's oldest known trauma text. Key facts: Inscribed on the front endpaper. "For Marshall, With deep appreciation for your friendship, encouragement, support and input over the years. Fondly, Ed" The inscription is signed "Ed," likely by co-author Edmund S. Meltzer. Sold as inscribed; no formal authentication. Full title: The Edwin Smith Papyrus: Updated Translation of the Trauma Treatise and Modern Medical Commentaries Editors: Gonzalo M. Sanchez (M.D.) and Edmund S. Meltzer (Ph.D.) Publisher: Lockwood Press Publication date: October 2012 ISBN: 978-1-937040-01-7 Length: ? 376-400 pages Historical background The Edwin Smith Papyrus itself dates to around 1600 BCE but preserves a much older Egyptian manual on surgical trauma, perhaps from 3000 BCE. Named for the American collector Edwin Smith, who purchased it in 1862, the original manuscript presents 48 clinical cases covering injuries of the head, neck, and torso. Its methodical structure?observation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis?reveals an empirical medical tradition rare in ancient texts. Features of the 2012 edition This Lockwood Press release reproduces the hieratic text, a hieroglyphic transcription, transliteration, and English translation. It supplements them with extensive philological notes, medical analyses, and high-quality color plates. The editors integrate modern neurological and surgical insights, connecting ancient Egyptian case descriptions to current clinical understanding. Appendices classify injury types and neurological signs, while an index of Edwin Smith's own unpublished translation is included. Scholarly and medical significance Sanchez and Meltzer's edition positions the papyrus as a foundational document for both Egyptology and the history of medicine. It demonstrates that ancient Egyptian physicians recognized the brain, cerebrospinal fluid, and pulse, and approached trauma through systematic reasoning rather than magic. By merging philological rigor with medical commentary, this 2012 publication reaffirms the papyrus's place as the earliest exemplar of evidence-based clinical thinking. Inscribed by Author(s).

- Wikipedia: Ludwig Koenen (* 5.
