Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to William Speed Hill. - A good and clean copy. - From the text: Laurence Sterne's sermon in Paris made a far greater stir at the time than any other he ever preached, but biographers have paid it little attention beyond a brief and usually faulty mention. Indeed, the exact date has been known only since 1969, when Joel J. Gold published a newly discovered letter of John Wilkes giving the date as 25 March 1764. Wilkes invariably attended the ambassador's chapel when he was in Paris, always jeering at the Scottish accent of the chaplain, Dr. James Trail. He was no friend of the Scots, but his evidence concerning Sterne cannot be faulted. Moreover, confirming evidence has now come to light in a letter from Lord Hertford, then the British ambassador in Paris, to his cousin and friend, Horace Walpole. Inquiry into the circumstances leading to the sermon shows that it was a central feature of a yearlong drama in Anglo-French relations, attracting great attention in both countries. The tribunal was convened "under the treaty between the United States of America and Great Britain concluded at Washington, Feb. 29, 1892, for the determination of questions between the two governments concerning the jurisdictional rights of the United States in the waters of the Bering Sea."Part of a series of volumes recording the resolution of jurisdictional rights between the United States and Great Britain regarding seal hunting in the Bering Sea. This volume consists of the appendices to the Case presented on the Part of the Government of Her Britannic Majesty. [Fur Seal Arbitration, Volume IV] Great Britain's Case. Fur seals were an important industry in the late nineteenth century. The United States claimed exclusive rights to the sealing industry in the Bering Sea. The United Kingdom disputed this claim and the matter was eventually sent to international arbitration. The award, which was signed and published on 15 August 1893, was in favor of Great Britain on all points. The question of damages, which had been reserved, was ultimately settled by a mixed commission appointed by the two powers in February 1896, the total amount awarded to the British sealers being $473,151.26 - in excess of $10 million in present-day inflation-adjusted dollars.Shelfware, signs of old worm damage to spine cover, minor spotting. Léon Curmer (1801-1870) is a celebrated 19th-century French bookseller and publisher whose name remains attached to the outstanding quality of his illustrated works. Indeed, Curmer was one of the very first publishers to master the use of chromolithography to reproduce in full color old illuminated manuscripts, as well as the then new technique of photography. The 43 unidentified poems featured in this set have been associated with 43 albumen prints of famous Old Master paintings housed in the most prestigious museums and galleries of Dresde, Paris, Montpellier, Florence and Rome. Each painting seems to be in direct relation with the poem's subject. For instance, a poem introducing Jesus is facing an albumen print of Guido Reni's "Ecce Homo" (Vol. 1, page 13); a poem on Abraham's sacrifice is associated with a photograph of Andrea del Sarto's "Sacrifice of Abraham" (Vol. 1, page 19); another one on Virgin Mary and Child is facing Raphael's "Madonna della seggiola" (Vol. 2, page 13); a poem on Charles I and his family is associated with a photograph of engravings depicting the British monarch with his wife and children, after paintings by Anthony van Dyck (Vol. 2, page 35). The painters featured in this work represent some of the most seminal figures in Western art history, such as Raphael, Titian, Murillo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Holbein, Garofalo, and Veronese, among others. Most of the poems reflect Christian faith and spirituality, the remaining few dealing with historical figures (Charles I) and mythological characters (Venus). The size of the albumen prints varies from 2 x 2 1/4" to 4 3/4 x 3 3/4". Not in Vicaire. Vicaire (II, 1087 & 1088) only describes two later editions both published in 1863 by Auguste Aubry: 1) "Dresde - Rome - Montpellier," third edition limited to 209 numbered copies. [3] leaves, 93pp, [1] leaf (Text), [22] leaves (Hors-Text plates). 2) "Dresde - Paris - Rome - Florence - Montpellier," third edition limited to 109 numbered copies, and five on Holland paper. [4] leaves, IIIpp, [2] leaves (Text), [26] leaves (Hors-Text plates). These two volumes contains the same photographs featured in our set as well as five extra. The other only known self-published copy of our set is at the Bibliothèque Nationale, whose bibliographic record does not indicate the number of photographs. Minor and sporadic foxing to very first leaves of second volume. Text in French. Bindings and interior in overall very good condition.
