POTTER, Beatrix (illustrator). London: Privately Printed by Strangeways], February 1902. First (privately printed) edition, second issue. One of 200 copies printed. Twelvemo (5 3/16 x 4 1/16 inches; 131 x 103 mm.). [84] pp. Color frontispiece and forty-one full-page black and white text illustrations. Original olive green boards pictorially stamped and lettered in black on front cover. Spine rounded (not flat). Spine a bit darkened, with extremities very lightly rubbed. A few minor scratches to front cover. Occasional very minor finger soiling. A near fine copy of this extremely rare edition. Housed in a quarter speckled calf clamshell case. An excellent association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper to Victoria, the youngest daughter of Blanche Wrigley (née Potter), Beatrix Potter's cousin: "To/'Victoria'/from/Grandmama/Feb. 13th, 1902." "Grandmama" was probably Mary Anderson, the wife of Beatrix Potter's uncle, Edmund Crompton Potter. "The first issue comprised 250 copies; they are distinguished by a flat-backed binding of gray-green boards, printed with a black-line drawing. The books were ready on 16 December and Miss Potter began giving them away to selected friends and relatives and selling them to others at one shilling two pence each. By this time, however, Beatrix Potter's career had already been given its first impetus, for the publisher Frederick Warne & Co. had agreed to accept the book for publication in a regular trade edition. But in February 1902, before the trade edition was ready, Miss Potter ordered another 200 copies to be printed of her private edition, this second issue had a rather better binding, with a rounded back and darker printed boards. In October 1902 the Warne commercial edition was published" (Morgan Library, Early Children's Books, 220, describing the 1901 first issue). Linder, p. 420. Quinby 1A. HBS 69526. $35,000. Signed.

Add to basketFirst edition. 12mo. Beige paper boards with lettering in brown, and colour onlays of Peter delivering the mail on the covers. Inscribed by Beatrix Potter to the front endpaper, "For Mrs McIver, from Beatrix Potter, Aug. 23.29." A very good copy, with some general light wear. Pictorial endpapers of little bunnies. Colour frontispiece of Peter Rabbit, colour title page vignette. Twelve colour plates, one for each month, with a separate page for the calendar surrounded by line drawings of bunnies. This was the only almanac to be produced by Potter. It took her a long time to get it how she wanted and as a result only this one was published. However, it is delightful. Due to the throw away nature of almanacs and diaries few copies of this book have survived. Beatrix Potter often signed her books for local residents and farmers of the Lake District, after she relocated there in 1913.

First edition of this charming paint-by-line children's book featuring Potter's most beloved animal characters. Quarto, original pictorial cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with 12 color plates, each with facing outlined illustration intended for coloring-in, two of which have been hand-painted. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed by the author on the second free endpaper in the year of publication, "Love to Mary Kynaston from Miss Potter and Peter Rabbit: and love to Joan and Phyllis and their little brother from all the little animals. (It is going to be gray squirrels next time, but that is a secret!) Thank you for a very nice little letter last February. July 11. 11. from Beatrix Potter." The recipient, Mary Kynaston, was Headmistress at Queen's College in London, an independent school for girls aged 11â"18 which was the first institution in the world to award academic qualifications to women and the first girls' school to be granted a Royal Charter for the furtherance of women's education. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated thirty books throughout the course of her lifetime, the best-known being her charming twenty-three children's tales featuring animals, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit which she self-published in her thirties after multiple publisher's rejections. The book was was so well-received upon publication in 1902, that within just a few weeks she requested a second impression. Now firmly established as a popular writer and illustrator, Potter began writing full time and went on to produce such endearing stories as The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of Tom Kitten, and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, among others. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in 1905 and over the following decades, purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape of the Lake District of Lancashire.

First Edition. The Only Peter Rabbit Almanac First London Edition - Inscribed by Beatrix Potter POTTER, Beatrix. Peter Rabbit's Almanac for 1929. New York: Frederick Warne & Co., Ltd., 1928. First London edition. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Beatrice Heap / from Beatrix Potter / Aug 23. 29." Twelvemo (4 13/16 x 3 5/8 inches; 123 x 92 mm.). [44] pp. Color frontispiece, color vignette on title-page, and twelve color plates. Publisher's original tan boards, lettered in brown on covers and spine, each cover with a color pictorial label (depicting Peter Rabbit coming and going) within a blind egg-shaped panel with straight base. Color pictorial endpapers. Some light scattered foxing, small light stain to the spine edge of the covers. A near fine copy, housed in a brown cloth clamshell case. The recipient, Beatrice Heap, was likely a member of Potter's local circle in the Lake District, to whom she frequently presented copies of her works in this informal manner during her later years. Such inscriptions - simply phrased, warmly personal, and dated - are characteristic of Potter's private gift copies rather than commercial or presentation inscriptions. Conceived by Warne as the first in a projected series, Peter Rabbit's Almanac proved to be an isolated experiment. Potter was dissatisfied with the format and felt it interfered with her other commitments; as a result, no further almanacs were produced, making this the sole example of its kind within her body of work. The almanac itself is uncommon, particularly in well-preserved condition. Copies inscribed by Potter - especially those dating from her later Lake District years - are notably scarce. Signed.
