An early New Zealand edition of this much-reprinted Mormon tract, which appears to have been first published circa 1880. No Jacket. 1st Edition. a special 4.5 X 7 inch (1816,c1816) hardcover in calf boards with spine columned in gold gilt and a black title label on spine, 236 pages with dated period signature on title page, rear cover held on by fabric bookbinder tape applied to rear inner hinge, front inner hinge intact but tender, Matthew Perrine was Pastor of the Presbyterian Spring Street Church membership to whom these letters are addressed, this Church was founded in 1809 opening in 1811 as an abolitionist establishment offering full communion to African Americans by1822, in 1834 racial rumors spurred a riot that damaged the Church forcing a demolition, in 1836 a brick structure was built in ts place which survived until a fire destroyed the Church in 1966, today this site is occupied by Trump International Hotel and Tower.

The first edition of this first translation of Walker's "Philosophy of the Plan of Salvation", printed by the American Press in Beirut with the financial support of the British Tract Society. Anonymously translated, the book discussing the insufficiency of human reason alone to achieve salvation and arguing for the necessity of divine intervention through Christ was likely distributed in Protestant mission schools, possibly within institutions like the Syrian Protestant College (later AUB), Protestant churches, or evangelical networks in Lebanon and Syria. The book was printed with the official permission of the Council of Education of the Noble Province of Syria. This official approval from the Ottoman authorities (Meclis-i Ma'arif of Syria) is significant because Protestantism was not the dominant Christian tradition in the region, where Maronite Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Muslims were the majority.
