A Very Good copy. This is a collection of writings by Albert D. Richardson (1833-1869), an American journalist, author, and Union spy during the American Civil War. The book also includes a brief biographical sketch of Albert written by his second wife, Abby Richardson (1837-1900), an American actress, play reader, and author. During the war, Albert's first wife, Mary Pease, and one of their daughters died, and he was captured by Confederates. However, Albert managed to escape and return to Union lines. After the war, Albert was at the center of a complicated domestic affair in which he fell in love with Abby who was then known as Abby McFarland and married to Daniel McFarland. Daniel had connections to Tammany Hall and was a violent and abusive alcoholic. He found out about Albert's and Abby's affair and shot Albert twice, the latter of which proved fatal. In a sensational trial for his murder of Albert, Daniel was acquitted due to political corruption and his ties to Tammany. Before Albert's death, Abby had gotten a divorce and had a bedside marriage to Albert by Henry Ward Beecher. While Daniel walked away a free man, Abby kept the Richardson surname and never returned to him. She spent the rest of her life working as a play reader and author and took care of her children and Albert's surviving children. Vordervorsatz sowie auf einem hinteren Vorsatz mit zweiseitigem, handschriftlichen Gedicht und kalligraphischer Unterschrift Brancharts - letzteres mit dem handschriftlichen Vermerk Brancharts "Gedichtet im Monate Mai 1832", es handelt sich aber um eine ca. 1875 entstandene Abschrift des Verfassers selber. Montierte Photographie (Portrait Albert Brancharts) auf dem Vordervorsatz - zeitgenössischer Abzug um 1870/75 auf Karton (Carte de Visite). Die Photographie stammt von L.
