The cover is worn & stained, the first section of the book, up to page 36, has light pencil marks and is generally worn, but the last section is quite good for its age. The author said, "A right beginning saves a vast amount of time and labor in any undertaking, and yet it appears to me, that more judgment has been used in any other department of study, than in that of learning to play on the Piano. For that reason I wrote some years ago a series of progressive lessons under the title of: 'Study with Amusement', with a view of benefiting my own scholars. Experience has suggested further improvements, which will be found in the present little work.".

"The work at least is not a hasty production. It is the result of reading, reflecting, conversing, and writing, in so far as the duties of the ministry would permit, during about fourteen years., Its plan is simple, but comprehensive; being a statement of principles, together with their proof, in two parts. In executing it, such language has been employed as is easily understood, if read from the beginning, or in due order. Care has been taken to distinguish between those things which differ, to identify those which are not distinct, to analyze ideas which are compound, and to harmonize those relevant Bible truths which appear to contradict." - Preface.

Covers rubbed and bumped. Age darkened, otherwise very clean and neat. Ex libris of previous owner inside (Alfred G Farmer). A nice copy. Friedrich Wilhelm Michael Kalkbrenner (1785 - 1849) was a pianist, composer, piano teacher and piano manufacturer. German by birth, Kalkbrenner studied at the Paris Conservatoire starting at a young age and eventually settled in Paris, where he lived until his death in 1849. At his peak, Kalkbrenner was considered to be the foremost pianist in Europe. When Frédéric Chopin came to Paris, Kalkbrenner suggested that Chopin could benefit by studying in one of Kalkbrenner's schools. It was not until the late 1830s that Kalkbrenner's reputation was surpassed by the likes of Chopin and Franz Liszt. Kalkbrenner was a prolific composer of a multitude of piano works, piano concertos, and operas. Author of a famous method of piano playing (1831) which was in print until the late 19th century, he ran in Paris what is sometimes called a factory for aspiring virtuosos and taught scores of pupils. He was one of the few composers who through deft business deals became enormously rich. Chopin dedicated his first piano concerto to him. Today he is not so much remembered because of his music, but because of his alleged vanity. Kalkbrenner was convinced that, after the death of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn, he was the only classical composer left, and he never hesitated to let the world know this.(Wikipedia).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. Now that you've finished reading the title I can tell you that this is a very rare book. And a First Edition (SD). You can see the covers in the photos. They feel like a lightly pebbled leather. They are quite clean with only a few light spots. The mustard-colored label on the spine is in pretty decent shape. It has two small abrasions or scuffs obstructing the view of the 'Y' and second 'C' in Cyclopedia. There is no loss and no tearing on the label. There's a tiny tear at both spine ends, also a little crinkling and speck-sized loss. The six edges of the book are in very good shape. Each of the four corners has only a small spot of rub-through. The page edges are for the most part clean. The middle page edge has four very small spots. These spots have had minimum impact on the pages, a number of them have a bit of a spot (1/16th") just peeking over their outer edge. The book is pretty square and it is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There are no binding issues with this 1834 book. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. There is a very tiny water stain on both sides of the juncture between the first five pages. It's so tiny that it doesn't even reach the print on either side which begins fairly close to the juncture. This little water stain disappears after these first five pages and there are no other water stains to be found anywhere in the book. In scrolling through the rest of the pages I actually came upon only four small spots of soiling. I also saw a few specks. I may have missed a few inconspicuous spots but it is very clear that these pages are very clean. Even the inside covers and end papers are clean. Also, quite significantly, there is no foxing in this-- let me repeat-- 1834 book. The pages are also in very good condition. I found two consecutive pages with the same tiny loss off their bottom edge, very far from the print. One also had a thin light crease. I saw two pages that had a very tiny tear off their outer edge, again very far from the print. I saw two or three tip of the bottom corner creases. I saw two consecutive pages with the second one having pulled off a tiny bit of the first ones paper onto its own outer edge, we're talking about maybe a 1/16th of an inch. I didn't see any turned-down corner creases or placeholder creases, really no conspicuous creasing at all. Nor are there any markings and there are no attachments of any kind. Finally, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. This book was prepared under the supervision of Lowell Mason who also in a two page Recommendations section praised the author for his "correct science, taste and judgment. He has produced a book at once interesting and amusing, instructive and useful". G. J. Webb also commends the book: 'I regard the book as a highly useful one, and containing a much larger mass of information on the subject of music, than any book of the same compass in the English language.' The book runs 432 pages. This book sold in auction in 1976. The inflation-adjusted price would be $248.00. The condition of that book is not rated or described beside a reference to chipping of the label.

With 50 Geometric, Numeric, And Titled Designs From The Author, As Well As 108 Engravings And 7 Titled Geometric Designs From The Editor. The second title in the Sacred Science Translation Society series. This book is a rare masterpiece of esoteric cosmology, coming from a secret French esoteric school, connecting the work of the cosmologist Rene Hoenne-Wronski, teacher of Eliphas Levi and Balzac, and the work of the French Traditionalist, Rene Guenon. The thesis develops a system of correspondences between the symbolic, geometrical, mathematical and astronomical systems of architecture of the ancient world. Loaded with 100's of diagrams of the most complex cosmological nature, this masterpiece is one of the greatest classics of the esoteric tradition.

Levesque de Pouilly (1691-1750) was from Reims, where he is known to have hosted Voltaire and Émilie du Châtelet; he also met Bolingbroke whilst the politician was in exile in France, and it is said that this treatise was published at Bolingbroke's behest, without the author's knowledge. He travelled in England, where he met with Alexander Pope and Isaac Newton; and it is very likely that he also met David Hume when the great Scottish philosopher travelled in France as a young man and visited Reims.
