Add to basket8vo, pp. 59; small hole in one leaf, affecting a word on either side, else a very good copy; in recent marbled boards. First edition of an opposition miscellany. The first four pieces are in prose, but followed by three poems at the end, of which the first is a satire on the prominent Marshalsea judge, Sir Thomas Abney, and his failure to observe court protocol at the funeral of Queen Caroline. This poem was also printed separately as a broadside (Foxon E569). The Negotiators is a satire on Walpole's futile attempt to avoid war with Spain: included is a full-page woodcut, a reduced version of the frontispiece to the separate printing (Foxon N18). The final poem, a satire on Walpole's two wives, had also been printed separately earlier in the year as an 18-page folio. Case 419; ESTC lists 12 locations.

The image size is ca. 7.1 x 10.4 inch.Antique print, number LIIII. It is titled: 'Perpetvo Imp C Probo Avg' and it shows Probus (Marcus Aurelius Probus Augustus, 232-282), the 47th Emperor of the Roman Empire. His reign lasted from 276 to 282, during which he strengthened the borders with the Germanic tribes. This original print originates from an edition of Hubert Goltzius' 'Icones Imperatorum Romanorum' (this edition published in Antwerp by Balthasar Moretus ca. 1645). The first edition of this work was published between 1557 and 1560 in Antwerp by J. Coppens van Diest. Given the appearance of eg. Rudolph II in this edition, some portraits were added after Goltzius' time in later editions.Artists and Engravers: Hubert Goltzius is often credited with etching the portraits. Christoffel Jegher made the woodcuts. Christoffel Jegher (1596-1652/3) was a wood engraver born at Antwerp. He worked for Rubens from 1627, and is probably a pupil of Christoffel van Sichem. Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583) was a Dutch humanist author, antiquarian and numismatist. He was born in Venlo, and studied under Lambert Lombard in Liege and later in Antwerp. He settled in Bruges in 1558, and starts publishing several works on ancient numismatics.Condition: Good, given age. Quite stained around the image. A small closed tear in the bottom margin (backed with acid-free archival tape). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
