Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Scarce in the trade, there being only a single additional copy available (and at $945). Particularly fine-looking exemplar of the First Edition of a collection of light verse from Scottish (Scotch?) poets. Rebound in full calf leather, with five raised bands to spine, no lettering. Text-block clean and bright, slightly wavy. The Advertisement at front notes a coming second and third volume if potential contributors would only communicate with the editor. This first volume, published in 1760, was followed in 1762 with the publication of Volume II and that had poetical contributions by James Boswell. Very light toning to and foxing of pages and only sporadic. Four-page range of a bit spot thereof, dissipating quickly in both directions. Tightly bound, sturdy, stands upright easily by itself. Contributions by the Reverend Mr. Thomas Blacklock, by Mr. R.S., Professor Beattie, Mr. A.E., Mr. C. and plentiful others. Edited by Mr. A.E. (Andrew Erskine). From the James Boswell-focused web-site, an entry for Andrew Erskine notes that he was "the youngest son of Alexander Erskine (d. 1756), 5th Earl of Kellie, and Janet Pitcairn (d. 1775). As such, he was also the younger brother of Elizabeth, Anne, Jenny, Archibald and Thomas Alexander Erskine." He served in Scotland's army, being in 1762-63 a Lieutenant in the 71st regiment, and when it ceased to exist, he "transferred to the 24th regiment, where he did rise to the rank of Captain. He lived with his sister Elizabeth (from 1768, Lady Colville) at Drumsheugh, Edinburgh for most of his adult life." He is described as living in penury but as having published his own poetry and that of others including of his personal friend Robert Burns. viii, [1], 2-231 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
