folio. full original dark green morocco by the W.H. Smith bindery (signed on lower turn-ins), five raised bands, gilt lettering on spine. (xiii), 268; (x), 257 pages. Two Volumes. The text in the 1620 English translation of Thomas Shelton. Printed in an edition limited to 225 copies (Ashendene no.36; Ransom 39; Franklin p.57, 196, Tomkinson p.8 of Ashendene section). There were 20 copies printed on vellum. Small bookseller's ticket of Philip C. Duschnes on the rear pastedown. Minor fading to the spine of Part I. Very minor rubbing along the hinges of both volumes. Very minor shelfwear. Overall a lovely set. Set in (new) Ptolemy types and finely printed on Batchelor hand made paper in red and black in two columns. This is the first use of the Ashendene Ptolemy type, and, as such, it represents a new direction for the press in its final years of activity. In Franklins eyes, Emery Walker's new typeface, derived from the font used for the 1482 Ptolemy printed in Ulm, was "a much lighter, more elegant letter than the earlier fount," the denser Subiaco. "And with the use of this less dictatorial typeface, the printer could cast away a little of his restraint in planning whatever lay outside it. So in Don Quixote we find at last an alphabet of open and freely drawn decorative initial letters, designed by Louise Powell and shadowing something of Kelmscott Press taste from years before." The Ptolemy face was used just three more times before the Ashendene Press closed. Includes decorated initials and borders by Louise Powell who was an early student of Edward Johnston. The blocks were then cut by W.M. Quick & Geo. H. Ford. The first page of each book is embellished with elaborate engraved marginal decorations. Considered by many to be the preferred book of the Ashendene large folios, and constitutes the longest Ashendene publication while also being the most expensive one to produce. full original dark green morocco by the W.H. Early nineteenth century American signed binding. VOLUME III ONLY of a five volume set. i-viii, 1-350 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12cm. Mid-nineteenth century half leather binding; spine leather darkened but decorated with five raised bands delineating six compartments; spine's dark brown title label and green volume# label retain bright gilt lettering; shallow wear/scuffing at spine ends; marbled paper over boards with scuffed leather corners. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers; large mid-20th century geometric personal bookplate of Little Rock, Arkansas collector Warren Baldwin on front pastedown with early 19th century small circular purple ticket "Bound by Akerman, Providence." discreetly affixed at top left (likely Providence, Rhode Island bookbinder and bookseller Charles Akerman, 1812-1879; ticket's style and type is very much in the style of early 1800s British binders; binding itself reflects work typically seen in Edinburgh and London shops rather then contemporary American efforts so perhaps there is some possibility that the Akerman ticket should be in his role as a bookseller than bookbinder; Brown University's archival collections indicates that Akerman took on an apprentice in 1854 so obviously he was already well established but clearly was too young to be binding books in 1822 when this specific volume was published). Warren Baldwin ink stamp dated "190-" at top of page 1; a few pencil markings amongst text with some foxing and scattered small stains. Binding is firm.…

London: John Thomas. 1840. Three vols, Royal 8vo. Late 19th-century Spanish marbled green calf signed by Tout (binder's ink stamp to verso of front free endpaper), covers gilt-ruled in a panel design, gilt corner pieces, spine with raised bands richly decorated in gilt, contrasting morocco lettering pieces, inner dentelles gilt, top edge gilt, green and gold marbled endpapers, red silk place-markers; illustrated throughout; light rubbing to extremities, else a very good, clean copy.A remarkable edition, illustrated with eight hundred engravings by the German artist Tony Johannot (1803-1852), this set in a stunning binding by Samuel Tout (1841-1902), one of nineteenth-century London's master binders.Charles Jarvis (also Jervas, 1675-1739) was an Irish portrait painter and translator who, after moving to London, became part of the highest literary circles, counting Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole, Addison and Swift among his acquaintances. His translation of Don Quixote was first published posthumously in 1742.Born in Germany to a Huguenot family, Johannot became one of the most sought-after illustrators of mid-nineteenth-century publishing. His illustrations for Don Quixote first appeared in Paris in 1836-37 in J.-J. Dubochet et Cie's L'Ingenieux Hidalgo Don Quichotte de la Manche, and were first used for an English edition in 1837-38, for Jarvis's translation published in London by J.J. Dubochet & Co.The binder Samuel Tout was based in Soho from 1868 to 1879, later moving to Whitechapel, where he briefly worked with William Coward. He also worked at Frank Karslake's celebrated Hampstead Bindery, which opened in Charing Cross in 1898.…

Rare second edition of the first part of Don Quixote in English. Octavo, bound in contemporary calf, engraved title page, woodcut headpieces and decorative initials. In very good condition with some wear to the binding, portion of upper spine. Translated by Thomas Shelton. Exceptionally rare and desirable. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladimir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality. He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon.".…

Engraved frontis. port. of Cervantes by Virtue, several engraved head-pieces, & 67 engraved plates. xxiii, [8], [xxv]-xxxii, vi, [2], 90, [14] (first leaf a blank), 355 pp.; xii, 388 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. speckled calf (joints very expertly repaired), spines gilt, brown & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. London: J. & R. Tonson & R. Dodsley, 1742. First edition of this esteemed translation and a wonderful association copy; this set belonged to Edward Gibbon and bears his bookplate in each volume. Gibbon was known for the wide range of his reading and he refers to this work in several of his letters and writings. He clearly liked this text; he owned an Ibarra edition in Spanish (1782), two editions of Smollett's translation (1755 and 1770), and the present edition. Jarvis (1675-1739), was a portrait painter and translator. A part of the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, his stylized portraits of society ladies were very fashionable. Jarvis advised Sir Robert Walpole in forming his art collection and was appointed king's painter in 1723. "His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original."ODNB. The superb engravings are mostly signed by John Vanderbank (1694-1739), painter and draughtsman. They were first used in the 1738 quarto edition of Don Quixote issued by the Tonsons in the original Spanish. The 90 pages in Vol. I print the first English translation of Mayans & Siscar's important Life of Cervantes. Fine and handsome set with his fine armorial bookplate in each volume. Minor rubbing and wear to extremities.…
