FIRST EDITION, pp. 82, crown 8vo, original black cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, a couple of very faint spots to endpapers, pictorial dustjacket, price-clipped by publisher with re-pricing sticker, very good. His second play; Butler left his native South Africa to fight in the Second World War, and thereafter studied at Brase…nose College, Oxford. He returned to his homeland to take up a professorship at Rhodes University; the present work is set there, in the early years of the twentieth-century, and includes a glossary of terms, including Afrikaans, at the rear. The dustjacket blurb compares it favourably with the work of Eliot, Christopher Fry, Ronald Duncan and Anne Ridler. (d'Arch Smith 100).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. The title page has been signed by the author, Guy Butler, in ink. There is also a lengthy letter from the author's wife at the back along with a newspaper article that has been pasted into the book. The dust jacket is rather shelf rubbed, edge worn and…marked, with small chips and tears near the spine. Despite this, it remains whole and intact. Internally, there are a few stamp markings and previous owner's signatures on the front end page, along with a retailer's sticker under the front board. There is sporadic foxing throughout but the pages remain neat, crisp and complete. Tightly bound and presents elegantly in cellophane. JK.
