Daily Mail 22 Feb 1926: "From our own correspondent /Buenos Aires, Friday/ The Brazilian widow of the late Mr. Marcus Woodbine Parish, who was murdered in Misiones Territory, Argentina, last May, attempted suicide by taking corrosive sublimate yesterday./ The woman was awaiting trial on a charge of instigating her lover to commit the crime. Bound in full contemporary mottled brown calf, boards framed with a rich gilt floral border and a central gilt medallion, smooth spine gilt; a handsome original binding. Manuscript on vellum executed in sepia and red ink, with text pages framed by blue calligraphic borders. The work is profusely illuminated and illustrated, featuring two magnificent full-page illuminations, a decorative cartouche with the name Gurruchaga, and three large historiated initials containing miniature landscapes. The first full-page illumination (frontispiece) displays the Royal Arms of Spain (Charles III) flanked by the Pillars of Hercules and military trophies, announcing the authority of Don Julian Joseph Brochero. The second full-page illumination depicts the Gurruchaga family coat of arms: a golden shield featuring a green tree (likely an oak) with two rampant wild boars standing against the trunk, surmounted by a helmet with a plume of blue, pink, and green ostrich feathers, all surrounded by an elaborate frame of military trophies (cannons, flags) and floral garlands. The document is issued by Don Julián José Brochero, described in the text as the Senior Chronicler and King of Arms (Cronista y Rey de Armas) to His Catholic Majesty Charles III. It is signed at the end by Lopez de la Huerta, certifying Brochero's office and approving his decision to grant arms to the Gurruchaga family. Ejecutorias (Patents of Nobility) granted to American ("Indiano") families are significantly rarer than those granted to Spanish citizens. Pedro Antonio de Gurruchaga, along with his brother Francisco Bruno, was born in Salta to one of the wealthiest families in present-day Argentina; their father was a nobleman and their mother from a patrician family. Don Pedro Antonio lived in Salta, while his brothers settled in Buenos Aires. At that time, Salta served as the strategic "dry port" of the Río de la Plata and the emporium for the fertile and rich trade with Peru; it was through this city that merchandise landing in Buenos Aires necessarily passed on its way north. Although Don Pedro was a professional soldier, the favorable commercial opportunities in Salta led him to dedicate part of his efforts to trade. Leveraging his high social status, he established a trading house which, under his intelligent direction and alongside the flourishing Moldes firm became one of the two strongest, most creditworthy, and extensive commercial houses in the Río de la Plata.
