Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, 1832-1914, was a British Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, Roberts joined the East India Company Army and served as a young officer in the Indian Rebellion during which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He was then transferred to the British Army and fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War, in which his exploits earned him widespread fame. Roberts would go on to serve as the Commander-in-Chief, India before leading British Forces for a year during the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. A man of small stature, Roberts was affectionately known to his troops and the wider British public as "Bobs" and revered as one of Britain's leading military figures at a time when the British Empire reached the height of its power. He became a symbol for the British Army and in later life became an influential proponent of stronger defence in response to the increasing threat that the German Empire posed to Britain in the lead up to the First World War. Juni 1881 der erbliche Adelstitel Baronet, of the Army, verliehen. . - First edition of the first comprehensive biography of the distinguished British Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), 'one of the most successful military leaders of the Victorian era. . After his childhood in India, he was educated at Eton, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Addiscombe. On 20 February 1852 he travelled from Southampton via Egypt to India. In April he began his service with the Bengal Artillery of the British East India Company in Calcutta and served there as a second lieutenant. In November 1852 he reached Peshawar, on the North West Frontier, where his father's division was stationed. Roberts served there in a mountain battery. In April 1854, Roberts was granted a six-month furlough, which he spent in Kashmir, due to frequent bouts of fever. After his return to Peshawar, he was transferred to the mounted artillery as a lieutenant. In the spring of 1855, he was again granted leave due to fever and went back to Kashmir for eight months. From the summer of 1856 he was posted as quartermaster. In May 1857, Roberts was transferred to the staff of the newly formed flying column. With this he fought in the Sepoy Uprising near Delhi and Lakhnau in 1857/58. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1858 for his service at Khudaganj. . In 1878, he led the troops advancing through the Kurum Valley over the Paiwar Pass in the Second Anglo-Afghan War. As a result, he was promoted to Major General in 1879 and knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath ('Sir'). After the war broke out again in September 1879, he was given supreme command of the Kabul and Kandahar troops, which numbered around 10,000 men. He occupied Kabul on 9 October 1879, installed Abdur Rahman Khan as Emir of Afghanistan on 22 July 1880 and rushed to the aid of General Primrose, who had been trapped in Kandahar by Ayub Khan after the Battle of Maiwand and with whom he inflicted a decisive defeat on Ayub Khan on 3 September. For his achievements, Roberts was awarded the hereditary title of Baronet, of the Army, on 11 June 1881. . Due to the reorganisation of the army administration, he resigned his post as commander-in-chief in 1904, which was no longer filled. He died of pneumonia in Saint-Omer on 14 November 1914, during the First World War, while on an inspection visit to the Indian troops fighting on the Western Front' (Wikipedia). - An exceptionally fine copy in a splendid school prize binding (Worcester Royal Grammar School), spine cover slightly stained, otherwise in very good condition. Add to basketFirst edition of this surprisingly scarce and important early biography, which covers Roberts's career up to and including the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), where he earned the soubriquet "the Hero of Kandahar". Following the war, Charles Rathbone Low, already Garnet Wolseley's biographer, "saw potential for good sales in Roberts's life. His memoir contains a wealth of useful material, although criticism is not part of it, although Low opposed the 'forward school' of which Roberts was a spokesman. He wrote: [My book] has been compiled from the Blue Books and official despatches, and from personal reminiscences supplied in conversation and by correspondence with Sir Frederick Roberts, who himself revised the entire work, chapter by chapter'" (Atwood, p. 7).
