HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - James Rosenquist emerged as one of the central figures of American Pop Art alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg. His background in billboard painting profoundly shaped his oversized fragmented compositions and his engagement with mass-media imagery. The publication of this catalogue raisonné coincided with expanding institutional recognition of postwar American printmaking and workshop collaborations such as Tyler Graphics and Graphicstudio. Rosenquist's works are held by major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate Modern. The volume chronicles Rosenquist's transformation from commercial billboard painter into one of the defining visual voices of American Pop Art.
