Rà mische Medaillons sind zum Teil exzeptionelle Werke der antiken Kleinkunst. Seit einigen Jahren erfreuen sich rà mische Medaillons eines gesteigerten Forschungsinteresses in der Klassischen Archäologie und der Alten Geschichte. Bislang klaffte allerdings eine erhebliche Forschungslücke in der rà mischen Kaiserzeit, die nun mit der Dissertation des Klassischen Archäologen Jürgen Lorenz mit seiner Abhandlung zu den Medaillons des Septimius Severus zu einem wichtigen Teil der rà mischen Geschichte geschlossen wird. In dem dicht recherchierten Buch werden zunächst Aspekte der rà mischen Medaillonprägung behandelt und ein Forschungsüberblick führt in die Thematik ein. Es folgt eine biographische Skizze zum Leben des Begründers der severischen Dynastie. Danach werden die Medaillons des Septimius Severus - getrennt nach Vorder- und Rückseiten - eingehend beschrieben, ikonographisch analysiert und historisch eingeordnet. Von groÃer Bedeutung ist der Katalog der Medaillons des Septimius Severus. Seit F. Gnecchis mehrbändigem Corpus zu den rà mischen Medaillons hat dies bislang kein Autor vorgelegt. Hierbei hat Jürgen Lorenz alle verfügbaren Medaillons des ersten severischen Kaisers in einem zitierfähigen und übersichtlichen Katalog zusammengetragen. Von besonderem numismatischem Interesse sind in diesem Zusammenhang die vom Autor identifizierten und in einer Grafik dargestellten Stempelverbindungen der frühseverischen Medaillons. Des Weiteren befinden sich im Anhang der Abhandlung Konkordanzen, ein chronologischer Ãberblick der Regierungszeit des Septimius Severus sowie hilfreiche Indices zur Benutzung des Buches. Jürgen Lorenz legt mit seiner Dissertation ein wichtiges Buch zur Medaillonprägung des Septimius Severus vor.
