Colour and b/w photographs and illustrations. Pictorial boards. Fine unread copy. Signed by both authors. This is a detailed examination of the work of Colonel G.V. Fosbery, especially his invention and development of the Paradox gun, produced commercially by Holland & Holland. The Paradox was designed for both shot and bullet. Essentially a smooth-bore, it was provided with an inch or two of rifling at the muzzle. With shot, the makers claimed performance comparable to the best cylinder bore shotguns of the time, and with bullets, the same accuracy as an Express rifle at 150 yards. Contents include: Section 1, George Fosbery VC, His Life and Inventions - The early years; Rifle trials; Volley and machine guns; A flood of inventions; A new generation of rifles; The origin of the Paradox; Two more rifles and magazines; The Webley-Fosbery automatic revolver; The final years. Section 2, Holland & Holland and the Paradox - Holland & Holland records and the economics of the gun industry; The development and introduction of the Paradox; The production history; The 12-bore Paradox; The 12-bore Heavy Load Black Powder Paradox and the start of the Dangerous Game Paradox; The 12-bore Nitro Paradox; The 12-bore Nitro Magnum, Long Range, and Express Paradox; The 8-bore Paradox; The 10-bore Paradox; The 16-bore Paradox; The 20-bore Paradox; The 28-bore Paradox; The Paradox and the Aero Gun go to war; The end of the Paradox. A thorough and engaging treatment of a little-known subject. A second volume is promised for the future, although no date is given. .

First edition. 9" x 12" pictorial printed wrappers, 8 pp. (including covers), introduction, illustrated, triple columns. "Texas Jack" was known to law enforcement officials throughout the U. S. as Revolver Instructor extraordinary and Psychologist to the American Police. "As such he has the reputation of being the fastest man in the world on the "Draw," "Reverse," "Hip Shot," "Hammer-fanning," etc., and the only living one who, according to Bat Masterson, "his (Sullivan's) speed with a revolver equaled that of 'Wild Bill' (Hickok) in the heyday of Bill's career." Texas Jack learned his craft from an early age under the personal training and instruction of "Bat" Masterson and "Bronco John" Sullivan, his father, and personally knew many of the famous frontiersmen who made history. There is information on "Wild Bill" Hickok, "Bat" Masterson, "Broncho John" Sullivan, Hickok's fast draw, Broncho John's "reverse" draw, Hammer-fanning hip-shot type draw, gun psychology, the horse pistol, gun-handling hints from "Texas Jack." Additionally "Texas Jack" Sullivan is a graduate of Notre Dame, one of Knute Rockne's first athletic disciples, is the author of a number of short stories, holds championships as a cowboy contender at Rodeos and Round-ups, world's fastest revolver shot, and holder of world's long distance and endurance canoe championship, having paddled an eighteen-foot canoe from New York City to Tampico, Mexico, in 1913 under the auspices of the Hudson River Yacht Club; and later in 1923 under auspices of the Cleveland Yacht Club he paddled across treacherous Lake Erie, a distance of 76 miles, in twenty-three hours and fifty-six minutes.
