"Show Boat" 1983 Theatre Programme, signed by Paige O'Hara (the voice of Belle in Disney's Beauty & the Beast), Donald O'Connor, Karla Burns, Paul Keith and two autographs that I can't decipher. These are genuine autographs, not a photocopy or preprint. Please note, this is a single page that has been taken out of a 1983 Playbill. Provenance: This came direct from the Jan van Bree estate. Jan van Bree (1938-2024) was a Dutch native and a prolific autograph collector. His collection spanned around fifty albums. It began in 1957 when he wrote to the famous Italian singer Beniamino Gigli and received a handwritten reply. That one letter spurred Jan to write to as many famous people as possible, all over the world and to collect autographs in person. Signed by Author(s).

Limited Edition, copy #18 of 201. A sweeping tale of three generations performers aboard the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River showboat. The novel explores themes of love, struggle, and social issues like racism, reflecting the vibrant and tumultuous American experience through the lives of its performers in the 1880s to 1920s. Ferber's novel has a connection to the Chesapeake Bay in that she drew inspiration from experiences and atmosphere aboard the Bay's James Adams Floating Theatre which she visited in 1925. This work was immortalized by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II in their famous Broadway show of the same name in 1927. A spectacular copy, one of only 201 copies in this signed limited edition of this American classic. Fine in a near fine slipcase. Bound in dark green paper over boards with white spine, gilt titles and ornaments to spine, gilt ornaments to four corners of upper board, top edge gilt. Slipcase has a few mild rubs at extremities and a small chip to binding paper at bottom left of opening. Hardcover in slipcase. Octavo. [iv], 398 pages.

Signed/Limited Edition. 398pp. 8.75" x 6" "AN IRRESISTIBLE STORY." Book collectors can easily rattle off the high spots of twentieth-century fiction with all points and states in place; the Mount Rushmore of writers holds firm in stature and value, mint copies of Fitzgerald passing from one collection to another, like faberge eggs, glittering on the shelf. The period had a rhythmic pulse that was alive, unfettered, modern: American fiction of the 1920s. At that same time, Edna Ferber's (1885-1968) novels were instant bestsellers, many of them memorably adapted by her to film, stage, and musical theater. In temperament she was more aligned with the Algonquins than the expatriates, her home base was NYC, not Paris, her favorite writer was Charles Dickens. She remained "popular" until her last novel in 1958. Show Boat remains one of her most enduringly influential novels, capturing the vanished world of life on the Mississippi river. Doubleday Page had been publishing signed limited editions since the turn of the century, and a peek at the list of those for the decade of the 1920s reveals their taste for literary eclecticism that includes Conrad, Kipling, Tarkington, Conan Doyle, Ellen Glasgow, and Ferber. Limited to 201 signed and numbered copies (of which this is 86), distinguished by Ferber's bold signature in turquoise ink, the vellum spine and green paper boards with gilt starburst corner devices, is a special invitation to experience a true storyteller's gift 100 years later which, once started, is hard to resist. Owner's bookplate, spine very slightly darkened and with minor crimp to upper spine tip, else fine in custom mylar cover and very good publisher's slipcase with some expert restoration to seams and a small chip along one edge. Quarter cream over green boards, titled and accented in gilt, teg, housed in publisher's slipcase with limitation spine label.
