The trains carried Japanese, German, Italian immigrants and their American-born children. The only family internment camp during World War II, Crystal City was the center of a government prisoner exchange program called "quiet passage" During the course of the war, hundreds of prisoners in Crystal City, including their American-born children, were exchanged for other more important American diplomats, businessmen, soldiers, physicians, and missionaries behind enemy lines in Japan and Germany.Focusing her story on two American-born teenage girls who were interned, author Jan Jarboe Russell uncovers the details of their years spent in the camp; the struggles of their fathers; their families subsequent journeys to war-devastated Germany and Japan; and their years-long attempt to survive and return to the United States, transformed from incarcerated enemies to American loyalists. Their stories of day-to-day life at the camp, from the ten-foot high security fence to the armed guards, daily roll call, and censored mail, have never been told.Combining big-picture World War II history with a little-known event in American history that has long been kept quiet, The Train to Crystal City reveals the war-time hysteria against the Japanese and Germans in America, the secrets of FDR's tactics to rescue high-profile POWs in Germany and Japan, and how the definition of American citizenship changed under the pressure of war.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Vintage 1973 theater program signed by noted American piano players Ferrante and Teicher. The 56 page program is autographed "To Phyllis and Frank, Ferrante (one one side) and Teicher (on the other side) on page 8 in blue ink. The vintage program is from the WZAT Famous Artists series in Savannah for 1973-74. The Carpenters, Johnny Mathis, John Raitt (Bonnie's father) are also featured among other stars. The staplebound 5 1/2" X 8 1/2"program shows some wear and fading on the covers but is overall a nice representation. "Ferrante & Teicher were a duo of American piano players, known for their light arrangements of familiar classical pieces, movie soundtracks, and show tunes as well as their signature style of florid, intricate, and fast-paced piano playing performances. Arthur Ferrante (September 7, 1921, New York City September 19, 2009), and Louis Teicher (August 24, 1924, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania August 3, 2008, Highlands, North Carolina) met while studying at the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 1930. Musical prodigies, they began performing as a piano duo while still in school. After graduating, they joined the Juilliard faculty. In 1947, they launched a full-time concert career, at first playing nightclubs, then quickly moving up to playing classical music with orchestral backing. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith relates the story that in the 1950s the two students practiced in the home of his grandmother Constance Neidhart Tallarico] Between 1950 and 1980, they were a major American "easy listening" act and scored four big U.S. hits: "Theme from The Apartment" (Pop #10), "Theme from Exodus" (Pop #2), "Tonight" (Pop #8), and "Midnight Cowboy" (Pop #10). They performed and recorded regularly with pops orchestras popular standards by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, the Sherman Brothers and others. In 1973, they did the Hollywood Radio Theater theme for the Rod Serling radio drama series, The Zero Hour.". Signed by Author(s).

1st Printing. Signed. 50 pages. Published in 2002. Rare Maurizio Pollini collectible item. A fine copy of the Souvenir Program of Maurizio Pollini's Chicago Symphony Center 2001/2002 Season solo recital, signed by Maurizio Pollini. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Without DJ, as issued. A scarce signature by the great Italian pianist, obtained on the occasion of the landmark performance of Franz Liszt's most important works. A great memento/souvenir of a magnificent marathon performance of some of the most challenging, most beautiful, and most important pieces in the piano repertoire. Pollini took a hiatus after this very difficult season as a result of a bad back and reported problems with his precious fingers, and did not return to active concertizing until 2006. He returned with a bang, and won the Grammy Award for his recording of the Chopin Nocturnes in 2007. Maurizio Pollini died on March 23, 2024 at the age of 82, after a long illness. Those of us fortunate enough to have seen him in person, performing regularly at CSO, remember, unforgettable musical memories aside, someone extremely shy, and as inside gossip went, a lifelong and inveterate smoker. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Maurizio Pollini collectors. This copy of the Souvenir Program is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the Program Schedule page by Maurizio Pollini. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of this historic program available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Pollini seldom did public signings, and when he did, limited what he was willing to sign to one piece per person, making signed materials scarce. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest pianists of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 294 pages. Published in 2008. The author's second novel. One of Aleksandar Hemon's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Aleksandar Hemon's "The Lazarus Project". His remarkable conflation of Past and Present, fact and fiction. As such, the novel is brilliantly interspersed with archival photographs from the Chicago Historical Society and contemporary images by Velibor Bozovic, mirroring the photographs that one of the characters, a war photographer named Rora (pronounced like "war"), always carries with him. "Hemon is as much a writer of the senses as of the intellect. He can be very funny: The novel is full of jokes and linguistic riffs that justify comparisons to Nabokov. Beauty and violence, in Hemon's universe, are far from mutually exclusive. Indeed, he seems determined not to let his readers escape the experience of war as a personal affront and a personal transformation" (David Leavitt). "She would one day die, and so would Rora, and so would I. They were me. We lived the same life: We would vanish into the same death. We were like everybody else, because there was nobody like us" (Aleksandar Hemon). An absolute "must-have" title for Aleksandar Hemon collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and dated (shortly after publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "11/02/08 Aleksandar Hemon". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It also comes with a copy of the elongated Souvenir Program, "The Chicago Heartland Prize", which was awarded to Hemon for "The Lazarus Project" and to Garry Wills for "What The Gospels Meant" on November 2, 2008. The Program is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the cover by both prize-winning authors. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and post-publication dated copy (with Signed Souvenir Material) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed set thus. Finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2002 for "Nowhere Man". Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant in 2004. Finalist of the National Book Award in 2008 for "The Lazarus Project". One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. CHAPTERS: The Function of Liberal Education; The Colleges Need a Vitalizing Purpose; The Social Interest in Liberal Education; The Aim of the Student; Knowing and Advising the Student; Intellectual Competence; The Search for Higher Values; Critical Inquiry; Making Education Dynamic; Experience as a Factor in Education; The Campus, A Laboratory in Living; In the World and Above It; The Instructor as Educator; The Student Before and After; The Program as a Whole--Recapitulation; Education for What? Index, pp. 197-202. FROM the "Recapitulation" Chapter and the final Chapter: "[The "basic assumptions" of the "Program as a Whole" are these]: "that a more perfect society than the present one can be attained; that its characteristics are not fully disclosed in some predetermined pattern, but must be discovered experimentally; that man is able to plan ahead at successive steps in helping determine what human progress shall be; and that the direction lies in searching for the greatest possible development of the potentialities of the individual personality consistent with securing the maximum benefits to be derived from group association and endeavor. / Each individual is a distinct personality, with interests and talents peculiar to himself. . . There should be an ethical aim in education. This is because it is the means of directing men's intelligence toward larger objectives than those individual men might hit on in a primitive society--objectives which means greater accomplishment for the group and thus have profound bearings upon men's lives. The effects of educating German youth in the deliberately framed doctrines of Nazi ideology furnish us with an immediate example of the importance of defining the ethical aims. . .Some of these aims have been narrowly conceived, whereas others are broad in their ethical concepts. Examples of narrowness in conception are: the Spartan emphasis on military proficiency; medieval emphasis on courtliness; later humanistic emphasis on Latin style; American colonial emphasis on theology; Prussian emphasis on regimentation and obedience; French emphasis on intellectualism; English emphasis on Greek and Latin and sports; and current [1944] German emphasis on racism . . .But a primary aim of the liberal college must always be that of developing the power to think--which in itself assumes the proper function of knowledge, the use of scientific method, and learning to apply thinking to the practical problems of life. . .The liberal arts college has to be something more than a repository of knowledge, presenting all sides of every problem, and remaining neutral in all controversies. This attitude is all too common among college faculties. . . .The method or pattern is the democratic way of life. Democracy as a principle and applied realistically, meets the tests of equity, flexibility, and freedom, in serving the purposes of society and meeting the needs of the individual . . . It offers the best chance for the individual to develop fully, consistent with group development. Democracy is essentially a method of harmonizing individual and group conflicts . . . ." (pp. 180-193). No jacket. Medium green cloth with light green lettering on spine and light green publisher's logo at bottom right front cover. Edges toned; pages lightly toned; a 1" x 3" white sticker affixed at top right ffep, bearing the name of "The Lucius N. Strong binding (NO cracks); square corners (NO bumps or curls; nugatory thin wear across top spine. Clean text. Solid copy, still relevant today. Paper Ephemera. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Offered is an original typed and signed letter dated December 20, 1974 from Thomas C. Cornell, National Program Coordinator of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), to Brad Glazier. A lengthy two-page letter, it begins: "You recently indicated interest in the FOR Indochina program. To fill you in on our involvement in this area over the course of the Viet Nam war years would be a tall order. Members of the FOR were among the first to protest and to demonstrate against U.S. involvement in the war. We organized, through our International FOR, the International Committee of Conscience on Viet Nam, which raised and coordinated pressure around the world in behalf of peace, and here in this country we pioneered counseling conscientious objectors and others with draft problems" [this lengthy letter then continues to document FOR activities involvement in the anti-war and peace movement]. Near the end of the letter, Mr. Cornell writes "We continue to seek ways of addressing the needs in Viet Nam, painfully mindful that the war, despite the Peace Accords, still rages and that U.S. tax dollars fuel the flames and pay for the continued imprisonment of thousands whose crime it was to protest the killing." With original envelope; the letter was previously folded twice for mailing purposes.
