Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First English Language Edition. Mishima's first book to be translated into English, and an enduring classic of Japanese literature. It has been adapted for film at least five times. According to John Nathan's Mishima biography, this book "became not only Mishima's best-selling novel to date but broke all postwar records with a sale of 106,000 hardback copies [in Japan]. The Sound of Waves is the only love story that Mishima ever wrote that was neither perverted nor sardonic. In later years Mishima often referred to The Sound of Waves as 'that joke on the public.' . On the contrary, he was almost certainly in earnest, determined to demonstrate to himself . that he was capable of creating a world so different from his own" (p. 120?121, Da Capo). Translated by Meredith Weatherby. "The translator Meredith Weatherby was one of a number of army intelligence officers with the occupation who settled in Japan. He came to know Mishima well in the early fifties. His first translation was not The Sound of Waves but Confessions of a Mask, which he had completed as early as 1954. The Sound of Waves was published first because Knopf was reluctant to introduce Mishima to the West with a 'homosexual novel'" (p. 132n). [2:blank], [iv], 184 pages. First English-language edition (stated first edition). Wear to the corners and some discoloration to the endpapers (particularly the rear endpapers), else very good in a very good dust jacket with minor wear and some fading to the purple spine, but much less than usually seen. This copy is inscribed by Mishima in English and Japanese on the front free endpaper.

First edition in English, preceding the British first by one year of "this classic work,Âits action might take place at any point across a thousand years" (The New York Times). Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Dorothy Norman with the author's best wishes Yukio Mishima at the X'mas time 1957." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket painting by Jose de Almeida. Translated by Meredith Weatherby. Drawings by Yoshinori Kinoshita. Rare and desirable signed. Set in a remote fishing village in Japan, The Sound of Waves is a timeless story of first love. A young fisherman is entranced at the sight of the beautiful daughter of the wealthiest man in the village. They fall in love, but must then endure the calumny and gossip of the villagers. "Mishima is like Stendhal in his precise psychological analyses, like Dostoevsky in his explorations of darkly destructive personalities" (Christian Science Monitor).
