Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 1-15. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to Jeff [Henderson]. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: One of the many important advances in Pindaric criticism in the last twenty-five years has been the growing appreciation of his peculiar use of first-person future verbs of singing, praising, or testifying, which all seem to refer to the present activity of performing the ode in which they appear.1 Thus, for example, when Pindar says nyn . . . keladisómetha (OI. 10.78-79), nyn . . . keladíso (OI. 11.11-14) or égó . épaskíso (Nem. 9.9-10), he is not promising to sing another poem at some future time, but rather he is talking about the poem he is in the process of performing. In recent years scholars have noted that this peculiar use of the future is not, in fact, limited to the epinician genre, but occurs regularly in parthéneia, paeans, other literary and cult hymns, and in choral passages of Attic tragedy that mimic or evoke special ritual songs like the thrinos, or the paean. Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. p. 1-20. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to H. Temporini. - Binding light-margined, 2 staple holes top right, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Virgils fourth pastoral and the Idyll of Theocritus that is usually printed fourth have sixty-three lines each. The product of nine and seven figures also in the first Idyll, which is formed in sections of sixty-three lines plus sixty-three lines and nineteen of refrain plus seven lines : 63 + 63(19) + 7. In the second pastoral of Virgil, the passionate singer, Corydon, has sixty-three lines, enclosed within two five-line sections that establish the context of nature and of ordinary, productive work from which love tends to detach the singer: 5 + 63 + 5. The name of Corydon is a direct, obvious link between the fourth Idyll and the second pastoral. Other relations between the first and fourth Idylls and the second and fourth pastorals would be the matter for a longer discourse. Number is more perplexing than revealing to the average reader of ancient poetry, who admits its function grudgingly in Dante and Villon, where the thirty-three of the years of the life of Christ assumes undeniable importance, but would not have it that the ancient poets could be so calculating. The present essay then will limit itself to a brief account of the relation between theme and number in two ancient poems. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

First edition. Inscribed by the author on title-page, 'D.M. Main Esq', with the writer's kind regards. Aug. 1885.' Spine a trifle bumped, but a very nice copy. In 1877, while still an undergraduate at Oxford, but already a keen exponent of 'muscular christianity', Lefroy had inveighed against two of the candidates for the Oxford professorship of poetry, Walter Pater and J.A. Symonds, for what he regarded as their encouragement to 'the worst passions and most carnal inclinations of humanity'. It was only after Lefroy died in 1891, aged thirty-six, that Symonds encountered his distinctly 'Uranian' poetry and recognized its author's 'sympathy with youthful strength and beauty, his keen interest in boyish games and the athletic sports of young men'. The recipient above, David M. Main, was the editor of 'The Treasury of English Sonnets', published in 1880, and 'Three Hundred English Sonnets', in 1884. Books inscribed by Lefroy, who died at the age of thirty-six, are very scarce.
