Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Like New. First Edition. A nearly new copy with no defects, just a few hardly noticeable rubs and bumps and a 'damaged' stamp to one of the preliminary pages. Despite such this book looks and feels unread with contents that are crisp, fresh and tight. Thus a very nice book in great condition, now offered for sale at a reasonable price.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An unabridged republication of the classic 1911 edition, this volume covers properties of a group independent of its mode of representation, composition-series of a group, isomorphism of a group with itself, Abelian groups, groups whose orders are the powers of primes, and Sylow's theorem. Permutation groups and groups of linear substitutions receive extensive treatment, along with graphical representation of groups, congruence groups, and special topics. AUTHOR: British mathematician William Burnside (18521927) studied at Cambridge University and was later appointed Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, UK, where he spent his career. Burnside published more than 150 papers on mathematical topics. Cambridge University Press published the first edition of his classic book, Theory of Groups of Finite Order, in 1897 and in an expanded second edition in 1911. For the next 40-plus years, this book was the classic introduction to group theory, a worthy ancestor of Marshall Hall's The Theory of Groups, first published in 1959 and also now reprinted by Dover. Classic 1911 edition covers many group-related properties, including an extensive treatment of permutation groups and groups of linear substitutions, along with graphical representation of groups, congruence groups, and special topics. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The British mathematician William Burnside (18521927) and Ferdinand Georg Frobenius (18491917), Professor at Zurich and Berlin universities, are considered to be the founders of the modern theory of finite groups. Not only did Burnside prove many important theorems, but he also laid down lines of research for the next hundred years: two Fields Medals have been awarded for work on problems suggested by him. The Theory of Groups of Finite Order, originally published in 1897, was the first major textbook on the subject. The 1911 second edition (reissued here) contains an account of Frobenius's character theory, and remained the standard reference for many years. William Burnside (18521927) was one of the founders of the modern theory of finite groups. This book, originally published in 1897, is reissued here in the updated second edition of 1911. It includes an account of the character theory of Ferdinand Georg Frobenius (18491917), which influenced Burnside's research.
