An excellent clean and tight copy, the fragile spine with some fraying to the lower edge is holding firm. The contents with the decorative bookplate of John Gold to the front pastedown and with pertinent pencil inscriptions to the front endpaper are otherwise clean and bright throughout. Inscribed by the publisher James Guthrie in pencil at the head of the front free endpaper "To John Gold / from James" underneath which Gold has inscribed "To Roger / fr John / Aug 1949". Originally published on August 24, 1846.Handcolored reproduction of the 19th Century lithograph under the direction of Frederick Ruffner, the founder of Gale Research. Ruffner employed watercolorists to color the prints and they sometimes signed their names in pencil in the margins. The print is available unmatted and may also be available matted.

Sheet size 5 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches. The title is an attribution, a modified quotation taken from the text based on the artist's marked copy of the work, and should be considered a working title. A unique original preliminary painting / sketch to illustrate Lewis Carroll's 'Through the Looking Glass', the sequel to his celebrated edition of 'Alice in Wonderland', winner of the Gold Medal from the New York Society of Illustrators in 2001. McGraw's colorful and vibrant work inspires children of all ages while not avoiding some of the edgier aspects of this remarkably complex work, generally considered to be Carroll's most psychologically involved. although no date for the full edition is set, this exhibition of work clearly shows that when published it will equal his award-winning 'Alice'. McGraw is an illustrator and artist who has worked with such authors as Janet Lewis, W. D. Snodgrass, Gary Soto, Robert Pinsky, et al., and reinterpreted classic texts by Carroll, Berthold Brecht, John Steinbeck, among others. Carroll's 'Alice' has been the subject of McGraw's fascination for years, as he considers the character to have become the archetype of innocence in Anglo-American culture.
