Although it does not state so explicitly, Froude's entry in the Oxford DNB appers to suggests that the Margaret Froude who edited his work after his death was the same daughter as the Georgina Margaret Froude (1850-1935) who married William Mallock. 1p, 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The recipient is not named. Addressed to 'Dear Madam' and signed 'Margaret Froude'. She cannot alter the opinion that she expressed to 'Mr Longman' (the London publisher). She considers it 'unjust to an author to quote passages without their context which, when standing alone are unworthy of his other writings'. The writings of 'Mr. Carlyle' are 'full of beautiful passages relative to your subject', and she hopes it will be easy for the recipient to find 'others to take the place of the two to which I take exception'.

Photographic Image and Clipped Signature of Thomas Carlyle, Chelsea [England], 1871 3.5 x 2.25-inch image and 2 x 4 inch dated clipped signature, both mounted to 10 x 8-inch seafoam green corkboard. Corner wear to mount, light spotting. Very Good. A nice photographic image of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), prominent Scottish essayist, historian and philosopher. Includes a small note, signed in black ink, "Yrs truly / T. Carlyle / Chelsea, 7 March 1871". Carlyle is most famous for his influential historical works and Victorian-era writings, particularly his book "The French Revolution," considered a classic, as well as "On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History." Instances of Carlyle's signature, even clipped, have fetched high prices at auctions in the past, and institutional holdings of any of his archival materials are scarce.

A hand written letter from John Aitken Carlyle M.D., written in May 1865 and addressed to the notable Victorian photographer John Watkins of Parliament St. London. He requests for a second time, a dozen copies of 'your photographs of my brother Thomas Carlyle'. There is some urgency as he plans to leave his address, 62 Hanover St, Edinburgh in only 2 days time. The letter is in very good condition, written in black ink on cream card to the verso only. Included also are 2 small portrait photographs: 1. A carte de visite produced by the renowned Victorian photography studio Elliott and Fry depicting Thomas Carlyle. In very good condition. Stamped Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker St, Portman Sq. W. to rear. 2. A small b/w photograph of most probably John Aitken Carlyle (doctor and translator, known for his 1849 translation of Dante's Inferno) mounted on paper and taken by T Annan, 202, Hope St, Glasgow. No Binding. Condition: Fine. Portrait etching by Samuel Hollyer, 6 x 8 inches, of Carlyle, whose works include "The French Revolution" and "On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History." The engraving is signed in pencil by Hollyer (1826-1919), considered the last of the old school of American line-engravers, remembered for his landscapes, bookplates, and oft-reproduced portraits of famous historical figures.
