The Inscription reads "To President & Mrs. Stanley King with the cordial regards of The Author March 29 1933 "The Real Thing, underneath, that changes everything!" p. 59 Charles Rann Kennedy. In 1932, King was appointed the 11th President of Amherst College - the first in the institution's history to have been neither a minister nor educator. As President of Amherst, King was instrumental in developing the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., into one of the most important libraries of its kind. Charles Rann Kennedy (born Derby, England, 14 February 1871; died Los Angeles, California, 16 February 1950) was an Anglo-American dramatist. He became an actor, press agent, and theatrical business manager. This led to the production of dramas for the stage with which he combined the writing of short stories, critical articles and poems. He taught for several years at a College in Millbrook, New York. In 1898, he married actress Edith Wynne Matthison. She was an advisor during the development of his dramas, acted in them, and also taught at the College. Edith Wynne Matthison (November 23, 1875 - September 23, 1955) was an Anglo-American stage actress who also appeared in two silent films. She was born on November 23, 1875, in England. Her aunt was Welsh singer Sarah Edith Wynne. Matthison was educated in King Edward's Grammar School and Midland Institute, England, and began at age 21 to appear in musical comedy, later joining Ben Greet's company, playing leading parts in The Three Musketeers and Money. She specialized in Shakespeare and classic drama almost from the start of her career. She was acting in the same play, The Merchant of Venice, with Sir Henry Irving the night he died. Irving nearly died in Matthison's arms. She appeared in Greek and mystery plays, old English comedies, and modern plays. In the United States in 1904 she appeared in Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer. Matthison married the playwright Charles Rann Kennedy in 1898, acted in many of his plays, and advised him during their development. A happy couple who enjoyed a long marriage of 50 years, they had no children. They both taught at a college in Millbrook, New York.

The editor then tells of his having Stearns scrapebook which contains a number of newspaper clippings, obiturary notices, letters from members of the Company etc which he is now typing & putting together. He's not sure what he'll do with it for now. Letter has 2 aged tape strips across the first three lines of text o/w VG, enclosed in a typed envelope, SECOND item is a typed & signed letter by editor without an envelope dated 3/4/78. The editor apologizes for not responding sooner as he's busy with his second job doing taxes which presently is tax season. Editor explains that he hasn't made any firm plans for Stearns' scrapbook yet. He has divided the material into three main areas: pre-war which is more in the genealogical area; the war that contains quite a lot of information similiar to that in the book; and post-war, G.A.R. information, obituaries letters from members of the company, etc. He thought of doing a follow-up on the members of the company after the war, but would need a lot of research in addition to what he has. Cincinnati, 1877. Three items: Partly printed letter in blue and black ink, dated in manuscript, approximately 10 x 8 inches; printed circular approximately 11 x 8 inches; and a partly printed certificate of membership with embossed red seal with blue ribbon and with a name, signature, and date written in manuscript, approximately 11 x 17 inches. All three items with fold lines. Very good. The private United States Secret Service Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio was the publisher of the American Criminal Gazetteer. Here, their circular outlines the Rules and Regulations of the company, noting that they solicited men to join a "corps of Officers" to observe and report crime. The third requirement listed on the circular states: "All Murderers, Burglaries, Embezzlements and Thefts of an important nature, where rewards are offered (or not), must be reported at this office immediately by the officer to whom it is first made known. The importance of these reports are manifest, for upon them depend the apportionment of rewards. " Crime is always to be reported, but the real motive for getting involved is the reward. The company, no doubt, got its share of the reward too. The partially printed letter reinforces the duty to report crime to lawful authorities and reminds the newly appointed officer that, despite his badge (not here offered), the officer has no authority to make arrests "we being a strictly independent detective agency having no connection either with National, State or Municipal Secret Service." The certificate appoints H. H. Saunders as a member of the force and is signed by H. H. Kimball as Secretary of the company. The circular, entitled Rules and Regulations, outlines the necessary qualifications for appointees, requirements of officers, and general rules of being a private detective: cool, collected, discreet, and disinterested.

Condition: Generally very good. A group of illustrated programs documenting mid-century performances of the dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist Katherine Dunham (19092006), one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century American dance. Trained in anthropology at the University of Chicago, Dunham conducted field research in Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, and Trinidad during the 1930s, developing a distinctive choreographic style that blended Caribbean dance traditions with modern theatrical performance. Her company, founded in Chicago in 1931, became one of the most prominent Black dance ensembles in the United States and toured widely in North America, Europe, and Latin America. Titles are as follows: Katherine Dunham presents Bal Negre, A Brilliant Dance Revue. New York: Al Greenstone, circa 1946. [16] pp. plus illustrated wrappers, 11¾ × 9 inches. Add to basketFirst editions, first printings, signed by Roosevelt on the front free endpaper of the first volume of the Presidential series, a very rare complete set of the official publication of Roosevelt's papers in the deluxe leather bindings (save for the Governor volumes, which were solely issued in this leather-grain cloth binding), and including an original prospectus. A mammoth undertaking, published by four different publishers over 20 years, the set includes every document of major interest and every significant address issued and given by Roosevelt since 1928, from his years as Governor of New York throughout his four Presidencies. "When the history of the second quarter of the twentieth century in American life comes to be written, it is probable that the story will revolve around the personality, activities and pronouncements of one man; and it is absolutely certain that historians will turn for the primary sources of their study to the volumes containing that man's official and some of his unofficial utterances during that period" (prospectus). Together the volumes document, more comprehensively than any other publication, the Roosevelt years from his Governorship to his death in the midst of war. Roosevelt was closely engaged with the project and contributed introductions and notes. As a result, it has been called "one of the most interesting, authoritative, and historically valuable works of its kind ever published. [Roosevelt's] copious notes explain in many instances the purpose behind his words and the eventual objectives to be obtained, followed by a very human analysis of what actually happened. These illuminating comments bind the material into an integrated whole that becomes, in effect, a running history of the Roosevelt administration by FDR himself" (Halter, p. 133). The Governorship volumes were only published in the present leather-grain cloth binding. The Presidential volumes were published in both cloth, and these deluxe issues in leather. Roosevelt took a keen interest in the presentation and design of the books the book designer Joseph Blumenthal, who collaborated on the project, recalled "Mr. Roosevelt was a book collector, a press book buyer and a member of the Grolier Club (from 1934 until his death). He was, therefore, more than ordinarily concerned with the physical appearance of this, his monument in print" (Blumenthal, p. 33). The number of possible sets with the deluxe issue throughout is very low: 500 copies of the first five Presidential volumes were issued in leather, but this was reduced to 100 for the subsequent four; for the final four the number in leather is not recorded but is likely to be much smaller than this. As they were issued over so long a period, not all purchasers of the final volumes would have owned the earlier. We could not trace any full set in leather in commerce, nor know of any other. For the set to additionally be signed by Roosevelt is superb. The J. B. Lyon volumes, covering his years as Governor, 1929-32 The publisher J. B. Lyon Company published the first four volumes of the set, with the papers and addresses of Roosevelt's years as Governor, issuing them in 1930, 1932, 1937, and 1939 (the last after Random House had issued their edition of Presidential papers and addresses). They only issued them in the present red leather-grain cloth, unlike the subsequent Presidential papers and addresses volumes, which all had both standard cloth issues and the present deluxe issue in leather. Halter comments on the significance of these volumes, and of the Governor years for Roosevelt: "Much of what appears in these volumes indicates a social philosophy and course of action similar to that carried on by the Federal Government after FDR became President. The careful reader of these gubernatorial papers will realize that the 'New Deal' in Washington was not completely new" (Halter, pp. 96-97). The Random House volumes, covering his pre-Presidential years 1928-32, and first term as President, 1933-36 Random House published the subsequent five volumes in 1938, the first volume comprising pre-Presidential papers (duplicating some material from the Governor volumes), and the latter four the years 1933 to 1936. The set in leather was limited to 500 sets, compared to 8,000 sets in cloth. The prospectus which accompanies this set advertises their edition: "Random House consider The Public Papers and Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt the most important publication it has ever undertaken". The prospectus is titled "History. by the man who made it", and is a desirable item in its own right: "a beautifully designed brochure printed on hand made paper. The first formal announcement of the monumental Public Papers" (Halter, p. 43). It is still in its original envelope, addressed to Frederick B.
