Shelved Room C. Günter Grass was born October 16, 1927 in the Free City of Danzig (today Gda?sk, Poland) to parents of German and Pomeranian-Polish descent. Grass would gain great acclaim from his first and most well-known work "The Tin Drum" published in 1959 as well as it's sequels "Cat and Mouse", published in 1961, and "Dog Years", published in 1963 which have collectively come to be known as "The Danzig Trilogy". The trilogy explores the complexities and hardships endured by the various peoples of the then Free City of Danzig (now Gda?sk) during the rise of Nazism and it's effects during and after the Second World War. Grass himself had firsthand experience with Nazism, having enlisted and been drafted into the Waffen-SS in 1944, an experience which likely pushed his outspoken criticism of Nazism and German failures to properly deal with it's Nazi past. "The Danzig Trilogy" is widely hailed as Grass' best work and despite initial bans for supposedly inappropriate topics, the trilogy as a whole has since been vindicated and is widely held as a classic of post-War German literature. "The Tin Drum" would see a film adaptation of the same in 1979 which itself saw some success in then West Germany. 1389714. Special Collections. First American Editions, First Printings.

Gunter Grass's extraordinary first novel [Die Blechtrommele in German, published 1959] is recognised as a classic of post-World War II literature. Grass won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 for his "frolicsome black fables [which] portray the forgotten face of history." The Nobel committee went on to comment "His writing constitutes a dialogue with the great traditions of German culture, conducted with punctilious affection. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century.".

First American editions of the author's classic Danzig Trilogy. Octavo, 3 volumes, original cloth. Each work is signed by Gunter Grass on the title page. Each are fine in near fine dust jackets. Dog Years is a review copy, with the slip laid in. Translated by Ralph Manheim. A very sharp set. The Danzig Trilogy begins with the story of Oskar Matzerath and his determination to remain a child. He refuses to speak, only banging on his drum. The surreal chronology and characters give a nerve-wracking description of life under Nazi rule in World War II, and finally to postwar Germany in the 1950's. In 1979, The Tin Drum was adapted into a film which won the Palme d'Or, and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

First British edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's classic first novel. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated in 1986 by Gunter Grass on the half-title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. With a signed letter from Gunter Grass' secretary. Translated by Ralph Manheim. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. "When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).
