First thus edition of this scarce and important work on mechanics by Jean le Rond d'Alembert, first published in 1743. This is an imperfect copy, with ONLY TWO of the five plates called for, but is otherwise textually complete. Some light wear and rubbing to corners and spine joints, staining to outer margin of several pages, lower font endpaper torn, but clean and bright overall. This copy bears the library bookplate of Prof Flauti (Vincenzo Flauti, 1782-1863), leader of the synthetic school of mathematics at the University of Naples, and author of numerous works including Geometria di Sito sul Piano, e nello Spazio (1815). In-4 °, XL, 272 pp. 5 numbered and folded table cards, XIII, first restored leaves with foxing, then in good state, contemporary calf binding with bands and gilt titles on the spine. D'Alembert, Jean-Baptiste Le Rond (Paris 1717-1783), French mathematician, physicist and philosopher, was one of the leading exponents of the Enlightenment. His most important scientific work, the Traité de dynamique (Treatise on dynamics, 1743), marked a fundamental turning point in the field of mechanics. It contains the exposition of the famous Principle of d'Alembert, according to which during the motion of any system of bodies, the resultant of the active forces is equal to the resultant of the kinetic reactions, defined as the product of the mass of each point by its acceleration. The importance of this principle lies in the fact that it allows any dynamic problem to be traced back to a statics problem.
