First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). This is the genuine first edition from Ray Long & Richard R. Smith and I'm offering it at a sharp discount to the other genuine firsts that are in very good dust jackets. Remember as you look at the photos that this is a dust jacket from 1932. That's like 200 in human years. The imperfections on the jacket are a couple of not large and thin tears off the front top and bottom edge, a fairly small loss at the top of the middle edge between the front cover and front flap, just tiny losses at the other corners, one thin tear off both the top and bottom edge of the rear cover. So the strength versus most of the other jackets is that there really isn't a significant chip or loss. There are a few small tears and scuffing at the spine ends. The front cover and spine are quite clean. The spine is not particularly toned. The white rear cover is quite clean as well. The flaps are in nice condition. They are quite clean and I'm not seeing any tears. All four corners have tucking-in clips, but the original $3.00 price is present and untouched, just above the clip at the bottom corner of the front flap. I've had the jacket in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book which goes back a number of years. You can see the book in the last two photos. It's in really nice shape. The black covers are very clean. There's a little whitish area on the front just adjacent to the spine, might be more of a surface scuff or scratch than a spot of soiling, hard to tell. The silver lettering on the front and spine is very bright. Believe it or not, the edges and corners are in terrific shape, no rubbing. A little bit of the spine ends has some crinkling. There are two thin indents around the middle of the spine, nothing terribly significant. The rear cover looks pretty much perfect. The page edges don't appear to have any stains, little bit of toning on the bottom page edge. This fairly thick 412 page book is very solidly bound. The pages are nicely tight throughout and the covers are nicely tight as well. There is a lightly penned inscription on the blank first front end paper (To Billy from Dolly, Christmas 1932). There is no other writing in the book. There are no markings. No attachments, no bookplates. And I haven't found any conspicuous creasing. The pages are very clean. So are the inside covers and end papers. Thus far I haven't found any soiling anywhere. There is what looks like a bit of foxing/spotting off the top edge of the title page, likely a reaction to the glossy facing frontispiece photograph of the warden. But I didn't see any other foxing on any of the other text pages facing glossy illustration pages so maybe it is just a bit of soiling off the top edge of the title page. All the illustrations are in excellent shape. Lewis E. Lawes continued on as warden until 1941, a total of 21 years. The same year the book was published it was made into a movie of the same name directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis. The film was remade as Castle on the Hudson in 1940, starring John Garfield, Ann Sheridan, and Pat O'Brien. From the jacket: 'Sing Sing stands out in the day' s news with greater prominence than any other institution related to crime in the world-- with the possible exception of Scotland Yard. And Lewis E. Lawes, during the 12 years he has been Warden, has done more to give Sing Sing a-- shall we say-- favorable reputation with the public than any other warden in the prison's century of history. Humor, pathos, tragedy, adventure, crime, instruction-- all the elements of human interest, illustrated by countless incidents and experiences in the lives of the men and women-- unknown and notorious-- who have been under the Warden' s care, make this a book for all types of readers, crime story addicts no less than students of penology-- readers who love a story for its own sake and readers who look for light on America's greatest problem, crime and its cure.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Splendidly bound in bright black finely woven cloth stamped brightly in silver and red on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight. In a striking dust jacket designed with prison bar motifs by Samuel Schaeffer. With the original price of $3.00 at the bottom of the inside front flap; and with light chipping and some small pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine ends. Note: This copy has two dedication pages, one laid in and signed by "Lewis Lawes" in purple ink and underscored. The printed dedication reads: "To those tens of thousands of my former wards who have justified my faith in human nature." The signed dedication page fits seamlessly over the original dedication page, but has not been glued in. A very handsome collectible copy and rather scarce with Warden Lewis Lawes' signature. Lawes was Warden of Sing Sing from 1920-1941. This book was the basis for Warner Brothers movie staring Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis and directed by Michael Curtiz. During the early sound era, the subject of prison reform was rarely addressed in Hollywood movies until the release of I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932) which generated a storm of controversy and sparked public interest. After that, the topic became a subgenre of the crime melodramas so popular at the time and, not surprisingly, most of the best entries were from Warner Bros. who specialized in contemporary films with urban settings, often based on true events. This was particularly true of 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932) which was based on the memoirs of Lewis E. Lawes, the former warden of Sing Sing. Lawes began his career as a nineteen-year-old prison guard and rose through the ranks to his eventual appointment as governor of Sing Sing. Like his predecessor, Thomas M. Osborne, Lawes was committed to educating the press and the public about the harsh realities of prison life and programs that could successfully rehabilitate prisoners. Many of his experiences would serve as source material for other popular prison dramas such as Over the Wall (1938), You Can't Get Away with Murder (1939), and Invisible Stripes (1939). Because the studio so valued Lawes's involvement in 20,000 Years in Sing Sing he was given final approval of the script and the finished film. In exchange, Lawes arranged for director Michael Curtiz and his cast and crew to have access to Sing Sing where several scenes were shot using actual prisoners - a rare instance of on-location filming for a major studio during that era. (TCM) First Edition with matching dates of 1932 on the title and copyright pages.
