Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. AQ4 - A first edition (stated) hardcover book SIGNED by Cousin Nancy, Tony Simmons, and Kinky Friedman on the title page in near fine condition in near fine dust jacket. Dust jacket and book have some bumped corners. Foreword by Kinky Friedman. 9"x6", 224 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Noah had it easy. On any given day at the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch in Medina, Texas, Nancy Parker-Simons, her husband Tony Simons, and a willing crew of employees and volunteers care for at least sixty rescued dogs, not to mention numerous cats, chickens, pigs, horses, wild mustangs, donkeys, and a rooster named Alfred Hitchcock. And then there's Kinky Friedman, the rescue ranch's "Gandhi-like figure" who brings stray and abused animals to Nancy and Tony, raises money for the rescue ranch, and makes sure no one leaves the ranch without a dog or two. In this entertaining book, Nancy Parker-Simons tells the heartwarming, often hilarious story of the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch. She describes how a series of "it must have been fate" incidents brought her together with Tony Simons and Kinky Friedman, and how, in 1998, the three of them decided to create a no-kill haven for homeless and abused animals in the Texas Hill Country. Since their first rescue - the "magnificent seven" which were, in fact, forty-one dogs liberated from local animal shelters - "Cousin Nancy" and her crew have rescued over one thousand animals. Parker-Simons tells the fascinating stories of several dozen fortunate dogs, cats, and other animals that have come to the rescue ranch, either to be adopted by new owners or to live out their days in the ranch's "utopia." She also pays tribute to the many supporters who have helped keep the ark afloat, including First Lady Laura Bush, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dwight Yoakam, Robert Earl Keen, Molly Ivins, and Don Imus. Everyone who cares about animal welfare will find The Road to Utopia hard to resist. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First edition (stated). Octavo in white DJ; vi, 498 p; 24 cm. Signed by author. Democracy; Politics -- Latin America -- History. Contents: Travels with Argentina: Defining the Latin American Left -- In the Beginning: Communists and Populists -- The Cuban Crucible -- The Second Coming-- Squaring the Circle: Reforming Revolution -- Changing of the Guard: From Intellectuals to the Grass Roots -- The Grass Roots Explosion -- La Guerre Est Finie: The Latin American Left and the Fall of Socialism -- Nation-building and the Origins of the Left's Nationalism -- Reformulating Nationalism: Longitudinally and Regionally -- The Democratic Imperative -- Democratizing Democracy -- A Latin American Dilemma -- A Grand Bargain for the Millennium. Soviet communism had collapsed leaving the Latin American who faces challenges that will inevitably affect the United States' involvement in the region. Jorge Castanenda (Mexican political scientist) shows why hostility and misunderstanding between the left and the United States have lasted since the 1920s, and why we have never fully understood or adequately dealt with the vast region to the south. In the past, Soviet Communist parties throughout the hemisphere have blamed every evil on the United States. But not once, claims Castaneda, has the Latin left proved capable of solving its dilemma of how to carry out revolution or lasting reforms without provoking the wrath of Washington. Castaneda examines the strengths and weaknesses of Fidel Castro, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, the Peronists, Lula and the PT in Brazil, the Sandinistas, the Shining Path, and other representatives of the left. Rich in revealing anecdotes and portraits, Utopia Unarmed describes the clashing interests, distrust, and insensitivity that have mailed the conflict between the two continents, and that in their repetitive nature would seem comical were it not for their tragic outcomes. Finally, the book outlines the dramatic changes that are taking place today in Latin America which are likely to produce a modern, mature, and truly imaginative relationship with the United States that has been absent in the past. Few spots and light soling to rear of DJ protected in archival brodart, DJ spine faintly sunned, extremely gently bumped corners, barely frayed spine head & foot, else fine in very good+ to near fine(-) DJ.

Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Inscribed by Paul M. Gaston on half title page. Hardcover and dust jacket. Small tear to jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Clean, unmarked pages. Paul M. Gaston, a professor emeritus, often spoke and wrote about the University of Virginia's early days of segregation and desegregation, because he was someone who had been there. A Southern white man from Alabama, he became a historian of the American South and an activist in the local civil rights movement in Charlottesville. Gaston came to UVA's Corcoran Department of History in 1957 and taught generations of students for 40 years. He was instrumental in the forming of the Carter G. Woodson Institute of African-American and African Studies and getting civil rights leader Julian Bond to join the faculty. Back in 1962, Gaston served as faculty adviser to a liberal, interracial student group, the Human Relations Council. He helped bring Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to speak at the University in 1963. He participated in protests to integrate a local movie theater and restaurant, getting beaten and arrested in the process. Signed.
