Inscribed by the author to Janet (Mrs Reynolds) Stone, "Instead of a Christmas card. Janet from David with love 1973". "Like Keats, like Wordsworth, like Coleridge, [de la Mare] is concerned with the inner life, the inner dream of rapture or sadness or terror; and, as with them, his sense of these things finds expression in images drawn from folk-tale and romance, or from a close and loving observation of visible nature. In the romantic fashion too he looks back to childhood as a period when spiritual experience was strongest and purest; and, above all, his writing is soaked in that typical romantic emotion mingling aspiration and despair, which comes from a sense of the poignant contrast between the splendour of man's dreams and the disillusioning sadness of his experience in this imperfect and transient existence.". Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. [1921?]. Signed by Bianco and inscribed to Mr. W. D. Teague, with the date of March 29, 1921. This is possibly Walter Dorwin Teague (1883-1960), the New York commercial/industrial designer, illustrator and architect, who founded the iconic firm of Walter Dorwin Teague Associates in New York (now called Teague and located near Seattle). Illustrated with eight color and many black and white drawings. Hardcover, with original dust jacket, 9x12 inches, 43 pages. Very good condition, in very good jacket with a few small chips and a tape residue mark. This copy has the small line drawing on page 43. Pamela Bianco (1906-1994) was a child prodigy painter and illustrator. Her paintings and drawings were first exhibited as part of a children's show in Turin, Italy, then in London in 1919 and New York City in 1921 (the same year that this book was inscribed). She had many famous patrons - Walter de la Mare was one of her early patrons; he wrote the poems in this book. As an adult Bianco wrote and illustrated children's literature. Her works are held at the Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Art Institute and many other museums. A tipped-in page in the book explains that this book grew out of the exhibition of her artwork in London in spring of 1919, when she was only 12 years old. "Her remarkable talent for decorative invention and her poetic imagery drew crows to the exhibition and obtained the enthusiastic praise of the entire press? They are accompanied by the exquisite poems that Walter de la Mare was inspired by them to write.". Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Faber & Faber, 1948. First edition, first printing. This is a very good (or better) copy. The Barnett Freedman dust jacket is notably sharp and clean, with two chips at the top edge. It has not been price clipped (15s. net). Coloured lithographic frontispiece mirrors the jacket design. The boards are sharp in the original blue buckram with de la Mare s monogram in blind. The text blocks are a trifle spotted. This is Siegfried Sassoon's copy, with his monogram library label to the front pastedown. He contributes Salutation from an Old Friend to this tribute. Laid in are two typed letters from Richard de la Mare, the poet's son and Director at Faber & Faber on his headed paper. The first is dated April 22nd, 1948, and reads: My dear Siegfried, | Here is the book at last. My father s | birthday is on Sunday 25th and publication will take | place on the Monday but I am hoping that there may | be notices in the Sunday papers on the day itself. | So far as I know the secret has been kept | very well and I think the book will come to him as a | complete and very happy surprise. I know he will be | delighted to see your own poem among the others, as, | needless to say, I am too myself. | He is at Hove at the moment convalescing | after his illness and I am hoping to go to see him | there on Sunday, taking the book with me and the whole | family! | With love, | Yours ever, | Dick'. The second, dated May 6th, 1948, reads: 'My dear Siegfried, | My father has had to give up hope for the | present of even attempting to express his gratitude | for everything that TRIBUTE has meant to him. As | soon as he is well enough again he hopes to write | personally. Meanwhile he is anxious to tell you | that everything connected with this treasured book | was a complete and perfect surprise to him: that he | has shamelessly revelled in its pages ever since his | birthday: and that its friendship and generosity | have delighted and affected him more than words could | possibly say. | With love, | Yours, | Dick.' A nice pair of letters, in which Richard de la Mare describes the health of his aged father and his appreciation of Sassoon's contribution. Loosely inserted are some newspaper clippings relating to de la Mare s birthday from the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Daily Post, The Scotsman, The Sunday Times, and others. Sassoon's involvement is mentioned in many of these. A celebration of Walter de la Mare (1873-1956). In a letter to Gwen Raverat, following de la Mare's death eight years later, Sassoon remembered de la Mare as 'so wonderful and so beautifully ordinary also, like most really great people - insisting that one can't measure what he has meant for me'. Other contributors to this volume include Vita Sackville-West, Graham Greene, T.S. Eliot, Lord Dunsany, Edmund Blunden, et al. Signed by Author(s).
