Add to basketPurple Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1931. Second impression (issued in the same month as the first impression). 325pp. This novel by Virginia Woolf is considered to be her most experimental work. The book consists of soliloquies spoken by six characters Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny, and Louis. Also important is Percival, the seventh character, though readers never hear him speak in his own voice. The soliloquies that span the characters' lives are broken up by nine brief third-person interludes detailing a coastal scene at varying stages in a day from sunrise to sunset. The book is bound in the original purple cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with just light wear to the edges. Spine faded and some uneven sunning to the boards. Light soiling to top and fore edges. Neat gift inscription to ffep, otherwise the contents are clean and bright.

Contemporary newspaper cutting quoting Hugh Walpole pasted onto back of front cover plus ex libris bookplate of Louise E Hill. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Facsimile Dustjacket. Vanessa Bell (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. A beautiful facsimile dust-jacket accompanies this book, produced from a first impression [1931] issue. It has the price of 8s. 6d. net to the spine as well as stating: This dustjacket is designed by:VANESSA BELL - [Virginia Woolf's Sister] - Housed in a durable plastic sleeve for future protection. - Original re-inked purple boards with gilt/gold writing to the spine which has been written onto the spine. There is a crease to the middle of the spine cloth, fraying to the spine edges and the corners are bumped. The boards are clean and remain firmly attached to page block. All housed beneath the accompanying dustjacket. The pages have age-related browning, soiling and light occasional foxing. Pages are otherwise clean and tightly bound. On the inner front board, there is a small image of Virginia Woolf, when she was about 20 years old. She certainly was a beauty of her time. There is also a photocopied image of her famous purple signature below. It's a nice touch. At the very end of the book is a photocopy of an old newspaper article headed: "I CANNOT GO ON" - WOMAN WRITER'S SUICIDE - At the inquest at Newhaven, Sussex, to-day, on Mrs. Virginia Woolf, whose body was recovered from the River Ouse near her home at Rodwell last night, a verdict of suicide while the balance of her mind was disturbed was returned. - Then, follows a lot more information about Virginia Woolf and her life etc. - It's very sad. - Also have Virginia Woolf's Last will written in 1930 [2 pages] which I will include with the sale as a little bonus item. It was only when I got a copy of this will that I saw that her first Christian name was Adeline. {Adeline Virginia Woolf} - E N D - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it.
