Add to basketPaper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Three Sided 10 Downing Street Letter Hand Written and Signed by Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. Dated 1839. The letter written from 10 Downing Street while Prime Minister is regarding political matters, and partly reads " . Many thanks for your letters I am ready to consider the Corn Laws . But I am not ready to put myself at the head of . " . " taking the advantage if the present prices under . to lower the rate of wages(?)" . " in the House of Commons & thus we should pledge to Parliament against the measure . " any very lively interest in the question . I know that they may be assured" . etc etc William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, 1779-1848, in some sources called Henry William Lamb, was a British Whig politician who served as Home Secretary (1830-1834) and Prime Minister (1834 and 1835-1841). His first premiership ended when he was dismissed by King William IV in 1834, the last British prime minister to be dismissed by a monarch. Five months later he was re-appointed and served for six more years, into the reign of Queen Victoria. He is best known for coaching the Queen in the ways of politics, acting almost as her private secretary. Historians do not rank Melbourne's tenure as prime minister favourably, as he had no great foreign wars or domestic issues to handle, and he was involved in several political scandals in the early years of Victoria's reign. I owe Miss Preston a dept of gratitude for her intermediation.Fortunately the brochures have arrived in time to be entered in their proper place in my forthcoming Balzac Bibliography, now in active course of publication at the University of Chicago Press. I am particularly glad to include the full data of your essays, because no one in America seems to know them Mon cher M.
